I have a 850 norton commando in which one of the three head bolt stud hole threads are stripped. Does anyone have or know where I can purchase a 3/8-20 Heli-core insert to repair it . Thanks Hershey.

Hershey,
I found the best place to buy heli-coil kits was ebay. I got a 5/16-24 kit for about $25 delivered. If you go to the auto store, they are plenty more than that. It was old, but not rusty and worked fine. It was so old the cellophane tape holding parts together was almost completely gone. Looks like it came out of the 50's.

I've never heard of this one, but seems a bit cheaper than heli coil.

I,ve checked with several major heli-core distributors with no luck for a 3/8-20 heli-core. I know they were manufactured, just finding who has them. Thanks Hershey

I use Recoil brand inserts, which are available in most common British thread forms. Google "recoil thread inserts" for on-line vendors and info. I think Helicoil inserts are also available in BSF sizes.

If they are too buggered for wire style inserts (Helicoil, Recoil, etc.), you're options are a bit more complicated. I don't know of anyone making solid inserts in BSF sizes, but it's not too hard to turn some up on a lathe if you have the tools and skills. I've done that in the past, and it worked out well. I've also cleaned up a really bad head by welding up the holes and drilling and tapping them for wire inserts, but it was a real pain. A used head seems to have an infinite supply of oil in the porous casting that makes it difficult to get a good weld fill. It finally worked out, but I wouldn't do it again. The last time I repaired a head that was too far gone for wire inserts, I used an oversize solid insert (Timesert) in 3/8-16, and replaced the stud with one with 3/8-16 threads on one end and 3/8-24 on the other. The difficulty with that was finding the right stud. In the end, I made one from a long 3/8-24 bolt, cutting the head off and threading the end to 3/8-16 with a full form threading tool in the lathe.

I'd avoid the kits (like Recoil) that don't have a good insertion tool, they can be a complete PITA.

By good tool I mean one that has a female threaded part to preform the helicoil rather than just a rod with a slotted end.

Pay a bit more and make you're life easier.
