Head suspension spring

Hi all

Have fitted a head suspension spring to my 68 and am trying to find some info about the initial setting for the spring tension.

Thinking about half tight along the threaded rod would be a good place to start but that is a lot of tension on the spring.

Any help or ideas appreciated.

I just it on my Mk3 and it is 1-1/2"/38mm from outside to outside of the coils. I just used a vernier caliper.
