Hard shift 3rd to 4th gear

Have you recently adjusted primary or final chain tension?

Check them then, first check the primary as if the correct sequence is not taken when setting the primary play then the secondary chain will pull the gearbox back and tighten the primary. If both are still 3/4 then loosen the primary, a tight primary will affect gearchanges.

Before you adjust the primary, recheck the final drive tension. It should be 3/4" to 1" (19 to 25 mm) of up and down movement in the center of the chain run WITH THE RIDER SEATED.

Only reason I say to check the final first is that if it is adjusted with no load on, then it will be too tight and easier to fix that first without looking at the prmary too. But kommando is right, proper to do primary correctly first.

Notes from captain obvious:
Theoretically, the gearbox adjusters are supposed to keep the final drive chain from pulling the gearbox back. If the drive chain is tight enough to do that, I would think the gearbox mainshaft would not be very happy, and the chain won't last long. Anyway, primary first checking slack all the way around a few times. One tight spot is enough to make shifting a tap dancing exercise.
Could be another problem, but I haven't had anything interfere with shifting other than the primary chain being a little tight.
