Halo fitting question, have fitted the halo to the bottom of the triple trees, fitted the little arms to the top, bent them to suite the inside of the halo mount.

Went to fit the headlight shell, with the two spacers, about 1/2 thick each.

The is still 3/4 of an inch gap between the shell and the halo.

Is it normal to have to bend the tabs on the halo in to fit the shell ? (new items purchased from Norvill, EMCO branded).

Thanks in advance.

My original shell was so rusty it was not worth re-chroming, so I bought a new one from RGM, knowing that I would have to replace the 2 mounting bolts with a UNF instead of the CEI (I think) originals. Upon assembling the parts, the new shell was smaller than the old one by not an insignificant amount and I had to really press on things to get the 2 bolts into the threads on the new shell. I should get new longer UNF bolts as I only managed to capture a few threads. I have heard that some of the new reproduction halos are larger than the originals too. The combination of larger halo and smaller shell makes for hard assembly. When you assemble things, the bolt goes through a flat washer, the ear on the halo, the short bracket, the spacer and into the shell. You might have to bend things a bit. Leave the halo and brackets loose on the yokes until you get the halo and shell assembled helps too.

Your other option would be to get longer bolts and a longer spacer, it probably wouldn't be noticeable.

Josh,

I hope these photos help. My bike is pretty well unrestored, just a quick refurb recently, so these should be the same way they were assembled when new.

I found my new halo from RGM didn't fit with the headlight and spacers that I had, so I made up some new spacers and bolts.

If you want it to look original, get a stainless 5/16 UNF bolt and grind down the head so it has a rounded look to it just like the bolt that holds the shift lever on. Easier than finding a chrome one. Then you need to cover the 1/4-28 nuts and bolt end on the bottom halo mount with a small white plastic cover.

Here's my original 5/16-26 bolts after I plated them.

Just a word of warning about aftermarket halos. Mine was getting a bit tatty so I ordered a new one through Walridge motors. I don't know who their source was but the fit was horrible. While the chroming and weld quality where good, if you sit the two units side by side the dimensions where way off. I still used it but had a hell of a time fitting it.
