Growing nuisance...

For a period of time my 850 has had some vibration at about 2300- 2800 rpm on the road. This is only noticeable in 4th and has increased more with time, also it manifests itself for the most part through the handlebars. The mirrors are rock steady and instruments are not affected at all. It is a felt thing like more in line with a low frequency heavy sort of sensation through the bars.
Anyway going to begin looking through primary & clutch, move into the ISO's, & give the alt. rotor a good lookover. Once I move above the 2800 rpm mark she smooths out as if nothing is amiss, but she is old and I'm going to give her a good check. This zone has always been present but to a much lesser degree.... I don't know.... I shall before it's over.
Maybe I'm just riding my 850 wrong, but when i'm going a speed that would run the engine 2200 - 2800 in 4th I would still be in third. My Norton and I seem so much happier in rpms above 2800.

That depends very much on your choice of front sprocket. On a level road I can chug along at 2500 in 4th with a 20 tooth front.

Twenny for the win! It takes a few minutes to clear a sprawling small town which quickly connects to another to soon connect to.....
I know how to spell but twenny sounds better. I prefer to keep the decibels down in duckburg too.
Normally if I'm not hunting gremlins I hit 4th at 2800-3000, but every song has a beginning and an ending.

Yes maintaining your bike is number 1 .... with 3 like Ashley , I get to spend the really cold days of winter in warm shed fussing over them ... I don’t like years when I need tires for more than one bike , lately it been $500+ a set , and the major service on the Ducati gets stretched over several days or more , oddly the Griso so far has been least trouble , 3 spots for oil/lube change , valve adjust are same as Norton with better access , air filter , clean battery terminals a must , plus new hyd. fluid in clutch and brakes ... the Norton and Ducati can be much more fiddly and costly to keep on the road .... having them in shed in winter is a blessing as ,other than snow removal not much to keep me busy during the colder months .... we all got to have/do something for our mental health , eh

They have their maintenance, though in the same respect they also almost talk letting you know when things aren't right in one area of function or another. Hardly ever has it quit without some indication of a problem existing. I like to think of the engineering & design style as old world transitional at it's best for the cost. They want to run, corner, accelerate, attempt to stop. What more could one desire for under 2K when new?
when I used to ride the MK3 to work every day I could feel when I needed to close up the valve adjustments as the bike wouldn't rev as freely but made more mid range torque( the wear slowed a lot when ! stopped using Kendall, loved the green though!)

You can still buy the original Kendall green oil. The Kendall name was sold to someone else but the Pennsy wells where it comes from are now owned by Brad Penn Oil. I was buying it through a local oil distributor by the case but not enough demand so they stopped getting it. I get it via eBay now. They make a 4-stroke 20W-50 motorcycle oil which is the same as the old Kendall stuff. My bike has never known anything else.

I'm still running the same Castrol 20-50GTX that I've always sluiced through it. I know there's better choices, but just can't seem to make myself change.
Did make the move to the Vernier ISO in front if I can coax the thing back into the frame. Damned bar slipped and almost took my right eye with it this afternoon because I was doing something intelligent in a stupid fashion...Bled like a stuck hog and almost broke my glasses. Play stupid games win .…….. Laying on my back cuz didn't feel like putting it on the jack for beginners.

Try swearing then crying for help then a T3 or booze.
