Grab rail installation

Here's what my Combats came with and may source something similar in hard ware but in a pinch zip ties have held mine on even strapping some luggage to it, till I gotaroundtooit more properly. Can't lift bike up if zip tied though.

Ouch. The clips have a plastic/nylon nut I guess because they are are bent to clear the tube and the initial contact with the bolt is at an angle which changes as you tighten it up. If it's stripped, you will need new ones.
Better shop around. $50 for new clips could buy some chrome or gas.

ugh definetly avoid the ebay nylon nuts things I posted as example. I just looked at Trixies to see the nuts are a thin steel washer like weld on with knurled edge for some reason. I assume Norton made variations according to who'd take their promises to pay for an order. There lots of different clamps to do this job but not many as light, thin and tiddy as my Combat versions.

I can't remember anymore what originally came on my '73 when new and I ruined the original grab rail when we flipped an open trailer over on the freeway and drug the bike upside down for several hundred feet :shock: . That's another story. However, I have a two or three sets of clips and rails in the shop and a couple of sets are like these:
RGM lists these as P/N 063798 while Norvil and Andover Norton list the ones with captive nuts as P/N 063641. I've used both with 1/4-28 stainless bolts and nuts (where required). The plastic coating splits on both of them on aging.

Those same clips came with my '73 basket case. I used short 5/16 nuts, bolts and washers. The plastic was split, so I dipped them in this:
I used the balance to coat some of my wrenches and pliers - the stuff only lasts a month or two once opened - about $6 a can

Yeah I thinned it with acetone - worked pretty well but took a couple of tries to get a satisfactory result. I believe it uses MEK as its solvent, so acetone is compatible. I haven't tried the spray, but I imagine it would end up with an orange peel texture, like that spray undercoating.
The fresher the can, the thinner the goop.
