I’m looking for a new stock cam for a ‘71 750. I’ve seen mention of Andover Norton, RGM, Newman and JS Racing as providers of camshafts on this site. Looking at the various websites for pricing, RGM 170 pounds, Newman 205 chilled/255 billet. Andover is at 419. The JS stuff looks top notch but probably overkill for what I’m doing. Any reason the AN cam is double the Newman and RGM cams? I’ve seen concerns regarding orders from RGM. Is that still an issue? Will any standard cam work with the timed breather?

Thanks

Mike

As an aside from the quality/price of cams, I would strongly recommend ditching the timed breather through the cam and go for the larger sump plug reed breather - waaayyy better!
Cheers

As you’re in USA… your first call should be to Greg Marsh I’d say…

Good luck finding a new standard Norton cam right now. I took a quick look and struck out. I did note there are plenty of new 2S and 4S offerings. However, it looks like Andover is the only one selling new standard Norton cams and has them in stock. Very pricey from Andover in my opinion. There's always ebay, but ebay in my experience is a crap shoot on used parts.

I've never tried a 4S, but I have used and am using a 2S (SS). It works on the street just fine, but does continue to produce power longer than a stock cam. Avoid running your stock internals engine up to 7000RPM and you could use a 2S if you want a new cam right now. I've got a low mileage JS02 I'd let go of cheap, but you'd have to get your lifters/tappets radiused to use it.

I have no clue whether or not Marsh ever does any performance work, but if he does he may have a good used stock cam laying around.

As an owner of a '71 750, I would say the best combination for it with a stock cam would be raising the compression by milling the head and finding '74 850 intake manifolds to add 32mm carbs while retaining 30mm ports. Flows better than a Combat. If kick start, add RGM or Mk3 lever.
