My bike (75 Commando) shifts great but I have a bitch of a time getting back into neutral?? It always wants to go straight thru to 2nd.??

'Could be a number of things. Assuming you've checked the cable and pushrod adjustments, the next most likely is tranny fluid leaking down the pushrod tube and contaminating the clutch plates. Typically, this also leads to clutch slippage. The other possibility is warped steel clutch plates which precludes a full disengagement of the clutch.

I agree, clean the clutch

The pursuit of a 2 finger pull clutch will bring better overall functionality.

Hi Fella

Just had the exact same problem with my 73 750, I had followed the adjustment procedure from the manual but after reading another thread here I tried just backing off the adjuster on the clutch centre until the operating lever became "Just loose" (Instead of one full turn like it says in the manual) and it's now shifting lovely and snicks into Neutral at a standstill too. I did however have the plates out for cleaning and checking and measuring the stack height. Clutch is a 2 finger pull back to the bar!

Backlash caused by wear of the MkIII crossover gearchange shaft mechanism can also contribute to imprecise selection problems-especially neutral selection.
Also make sure the neutral switch is screwed in only far enough to operate reliably.
