I have just fitted a new layshaft , layshaft bush, layshaft bearing and first gear pinion bush
The box is now together and all appears to be fine apart from a reluctance to go into 1st gear
This gearbox has never been the best at selecting 1st in the past
I will take it out to see what it's like but has anyone had this problem?
What should I be looking at?
It sounds like the pinion dogs are not quite engaging
Cheers

My Norton box, low miles from new and rebuilt by Norman White, was also crap at engaging first when at a standstill. I just got in the habit dragging the clutch slightly and momentarily and then I’d would engage.

Of course, the TTI requires no such faffing !

It will be better when moving, as I couldn't engage properly after last winters rebuild and this forums knowledge helped with that info. Been good all summer ? Others may have a different prognosis. Keep spinning by hand, the best you can and shift through the gears. Ade

Does shimming the kick starter shaft have an affect on that? I know it affects popping out of first under hard acceleration.

I ended up with 60 thou of end float after my rebuild with the new gaskets etc. Shimmed mine as thought it was a bit excessive. Brought it back to around 20 and has been fine all summer. Rear chain is a bit slack at the moment, so has gone a bit clunky going into 1st. In bed for winter now so time for fettling.

My gb is a little difficult into first from standstill. No noticeable click or notchiness. I find I need to clutch in/out twice then it goes in first everytime, and again this is unneeded at standstill. Goes to first fine while rolling. This situation has happened since lastwinters gb rebuild. I used the deep groove ball bearing on layshaft per Mick Hemmings guidance, no shimming.

I reported this in another thread and few suggested the primary chain tension may be too tight.

Well I'm happy to report that my gearbox is fine
Just very occasionally dosent want to go in first from a standstill
Basically the problem I had was my rearsets , the angle the gearbox link was at was too excessive
I moved it forward 2 splines and adjusted the link rod and all is well
I tried a standard gear lever on the box before trying this and I could see the difference the rear sets make
Maybe I should leave stuff alone?
Naaaaaaaaaa
