gearbox sprocket removal question

In the manuals it says to not let the shaft rotate while removing the gearbox sprocket. Unfortunately I had a hell of a time getting the sprocket off, and the shaft definitely rotated. Why do they say not to rotate it? Is there a mechanical reason, or other?

I believe the manual is simply telling you that you need to hold the shaft (usually by applying the rear brake) in order to get the nut off.

It often helps if the actual manual version can be given, and whereabouts in the manual the information is?

As the instructions in section D (gearbox) of the factory manual "changing the countershaft sprocket" states that "...the sprocket must be prevented from turning whilst the left hand nut is released..." and nothing about needing to stop the shaft rotating, unless that information is given in another section or is given in something other than the factory manual?

I believe that's what mine says, but I was assuming if the sprocket shouldn't be turned that the shaft shouldn't either as they are connected... Or one out of the 3 I have says something about the shaft? I wasn't sure if it would change something inside the gearbox. If there's no mechanical reason other than to break the nut free then question answered. Thanks again guys.

The only reason it would be necessary to stop the (main)shaft turning that I can think of, would be when loosening or tightening the nuts at either end of it?

So if the mainshaft turns it will affect the other side? How do I set it back to position?

No, nothing will happen, and perhaps you misunderstood what I meant, but the mainshaft should only need to be stopped from turning when the clutch centre nut needs to be loosened at the drive side end, or when the nut at the other end of the mainshaft needs to be loosened, for instance if you intended to remove the gearbox inner cover, and there would be no other reason to stop the shaft rotating that I am aware of.
