Gearbox service

Seems straightfoward. remove drain on lower rear of box, drain, refit plug. Now to refill, not 100% sure here. Remove inspection cover on right side(a little above and behind kick str) and fill thru here? Am going to use 1 pint of 75-90 syn gear oil. Once serviced, is there a procedure to check for the proper oil level in the box? I have the workshop manual, some of the service info is lacking. Thanks!

You should find a hexagonal level pug on the outer cover to the rear of the kickstart?

So remove the plug, and fill slowly through the inspection hole until oil starts to dribble out of the level hole.

The lube will be several seconds late on dribbling out the overflow, then it will make a mess. Start by measuring and pouring in the prescribed amount, then add a squirt at a time and look for the dribble.

One problem is the outer cover gasket that acts as a "dam" for about 2 oz. of lube. So, if you don't remove the cover, you still have old lube and grunt trapped there. The gasket also slows down the lube as you add it in, that's why it's a few seconds behind the pour to show at the overflow.

Alternatively, a light can be shone into the inspection hole, the inside of the level hole can be seen through the inspection hole, and oil can then be added until it is seen to reach the level hole?

Of course if that method is used, then the level plug needn't actually be removed at all, so no mess!

Thank you all for the prompt replies... will check for the level plug. After draining I did put about 1/2 a quart of ATF in to help clean things out, let sit in there for a couple of days. Also did the same for the primary, after seeing that Black goo posing as lube that I drained out.

When my inspection bolt stripped out, I realized how redundant it was and sealed it up. Taking the cover off and looking at the oil level when the bike is level made a lot of sense. I have also had good luck with the Redline synthetic lube. It is red and will stand out in your primary if it migrates.

I changed my oil in the gearbox the same. Filled thru inspection plug ( where you can see the clutch cable end) . since then I now have a gearbox oil leak on that side of the gearbox. havent found where or why yet so wondering if i filled the wrong hole.

Nope, that's where you fill it, all right...

Wipe everything up and start looking closely. The leak will not always be where the drip is, especially if you are trying to pinpoint it after riding the bike a while. Check for wet migration path to the source.
