In addition to the main shaft, and with enough AMC gearbox parts you can. The release cam profile is different, the outer cover cable outlet has a noncommando position, and some of the internal gears have a different profile, and depending on how early....since there is the early sprocket, the kick start return spring is also different if the series is a "N" instead of the later "NA" series.
You would be much better off to "trade" for a commando unit.
You can see the classic featherbed spring chaffing marks in the pix, so of course it is not a matchless box
