HI all, looking to replace the gearbox oil. The Haynes manual says "90 EP Castrol Hypoy". Any idea where I can buy this in Canada or suggestions on an alternative? Thanks

Torontonian says locate a supply of Redline Shockproof . I could use some too so lemmeee know if successful .

You can purchase Redline products direct from them, or simply ask them where the nearest dealer is, they are easily reachable on the phone; friendly too. The Shock-Proof gear oil did a lot for my son's Hardley, made no perceptible difference in my R90S, and runs neck and neck with common 85W-90-149 cheapo store brands available at my local NAPA in my British iron.

DISCLAIMER: my post is not intended to start an oil thread, with the exception of speaking to the previous post, I have not referenced any brand names, not do I specifically recommend any. :-)

A big "+1" from me regarding Red Line.

I don't allow any other brands in my shed!

Even the kids bicycle chains get Red Line !!

Where do you buy it from in the UK?

Ian

Am I wrong to say that TTI says "no" to shock proof oil in their boxes?

I don't mean to start an oil thread either, but I saw 85W-90 mentioned – isn't multigrade a bad idea in our separately mounted gearboxes, as they take a while to warm up? I've avoided buying it, just wondering whether or not that's right. I would worry about the lower viscosity of a multigrade when cool, in a gearbox that expects straight 90.

Yes they're OK, but I personally found they tried to sell me what they had rather than get me what I wanted. They also didn't fully understand the specs and the difference between Redline car oil and motorcycle specific oil (Zinc content).

So I now use these guys instead: www.oldhallperformance.com

I buy in a reasonable quantity to get a discount and minimise postage costs etc.

I use lightweight gear oil and 20/60 motorcycle engine oil.

I have tried most of them , and gone back to 90w .
Works as well as any at a reasonable price .
Fairly standard stuff , so should be availiable from most oil distributors .

Thanks All for the suggestions. There is actually a retailer here in Calgary that handles RedLine. Will be heading over to pick some up this weekend.

Hey Torontonian, I went on the RedLine website and did a dealer locator, they directed me to a place in my area. Good luck!

That's the story of my life! Been going on since I bought my first bike!

YEP...no need to overthink any of this.

OTOH, several people I know run ATF in the gearbox and have been doing so for years with no reported issues. I can understand one aspect of the appeal - lower viscosity which means increased output due to reduced friction. But I have to admit that although many current automotive manual gearboxes use ATF, I'm not prepared to use it in the commando gearbox. Although I have used it in the chain case as long as I have owned Commandos.

I'll have to try them in the future as they are only a couple of miles away.

Mine's only ever had plain old 90W. When I took the box apart at 10,000 miles to replace the layshaft bearing it looked like new inside, including the suspect bearing. I changed the bearing and filled it with 90W out of the same 5 gallon bucket I fill my trucks and tractors with. I don't think it's all that critical.

In reply to Onder about the TTI box, yes Bruce of TTI didnt recommend Redline Liteweight Shockproof for his boxes as when he got them back for repair or servicing, he didnt like the mess inside the box from the oil as it coats everything and hard to clean off (as it should be) . I run it in my AMC 4 x speed box in the Roadster, excellent oil.
