Hi,

My gearbox mainshaft bearing had a metal seal on one side, facing the clutch. Can a rubber sealed bearing be used, or does it need to be a bit tougher?

If its a bearing rated for automotive use, then the seal will be somewhat better than 'rubber' ?
In which case it should be good to go.

If it says made in the peoples republic of translyvania or similar, and 'not for high speed use' you may need to get a few more opinions...

Gday Don, the seal with the metal outer on the seal is referd to as a "shielded" seal and is used for in a harsher operating envoironments eg; agricultural sector. So a normal rubberised seal IMHO would be fine for the Norton box as its well protected.
