The mainshaft on my gear box has, for lack of a better term, a circlip on it right where it comes through the sleeve gear. I don't see this part on old brits parts list, or on any members photos i see on here of gear box tear downs. whats the deal with it? Also seems rather loose on there, like i could pop it off with a flat head and a little pressure.

The circlip and the cupped washer locate the clutch assembly at the rear (and is the part that often fails if the clutch nut is tightened to the manual's 70 ft.lb. recommendation).

From the looks of it in the photo you should get a new replacement circlip. This is typical.

I kept this note from a while ago, forget who.....The circlip behind the clutch locating washer should be replaced with #15 shown here. http://www.oldbritts.com/1975_g12.html

This is a problem area and when you apply 70ft lb (as recomended)to the clutch center, the stress under load has and will shear the oem clip. Many are reducing to 40 ft lb's at the clutch center nut to remedy this issue.kevbo82 said:
The 06-8072 clip is more robust and simply does a better job. It is tougher to get on, but that is the nature of the beast. And yes, run it down the shaft.
