Gear Oil

In over 43 years of ownership I have always used the recommended gear oil in the bible (workshop manual) Hypode gear oil and have had no problems except for the famous layshaft bearing failure at 12k miles and worn kick start gear where the kick start pawl sits in the gear and a broken kick start shaft, and 4 kick start pawls, everything else is orginal inside, my gear box has over 160k miles on it, it shifts very smoothly and just clicks into all gears, I only change the oil when I have to go into the GB and no other time so I say about 6 times in 43 years.

I've been using bog standard ep90 for over 40years with a squirt or two of molyslip. First ever gearbox strip was last winter and need not have bothered. Just worried about the dreaded layshaft bearing ! Dragged a chair for a couple of years in the late 70's too ! Okay not a commando but 650ss, same gearbox almost, marked NA.
