I am piecing together a '72 Commando for my youngest son and as the bike is a bitsa I was thinking about alternatives for the gauges. I have a set of original gauges but both of them have the threaded studs snapped off. What modern alternatives are out there that will fit the original gauge holders? I was hoping that CNW would have something but I couldn't find anything. Smiths?

Options. Repro gages - cheap but bad reputation for failing. New smiths digital gages - expensive but nice. I would just get some housings off ebay and rebuild the ones you got. Plenty of triumph ones.

Just run the old dead ones. They will look right and nobody will know the diff. I have friends who gave up keeping them working years ago. You don't need a tach to know when to shift a Norton and most people ride the speed of traffic. If you are going faster than traffic and you get busted, a working speedo isn't going to help you much.

There was an article many years ago in Easy Rider magazine where they suggested marking your twist grip with a knife for the speed limit in top gear (55 mph at the time).

The electronic ones are not that expensive, if you factor in good cores and having them rebuilt. I ordered a new tach last year from AN - with shipping and exchange, it was around $300 CAD. It is very nice to not have a wavey tach needle, and one less engine leakage point.

Last quote I saw for a rebuild (minus core) was $250 CAD.

FWIW

That’s actually an interesting idea.
