Garmin Zumo GPS vs Tomtom

That's how my new TomTom works as well, wifi downloads for map updates.

I suspect his Garmin requires a cable for map updates like my old TomTom. Also, he might have to buy the new map, pretty sure his unit is not one of the "lifetime free maps" models.

We are doing a ride together later in the summer, we might play with the Garmin maps then, if he brings it along. He was getting pretty frustrated with it.
You expect a 5 year old map to be missing any recent road changes but it shouldn't be missing established towns ! That isn't generally an update item.

I still have my original 12 year old TomTom map on SD card. It's not great in built up areas because of all the road changes, but on those old established highways it's bang on, no important difference from the 2019 550 map.

My auto windshield mount Garmin is over 5 years and has free lifetime maps. I’m actually ashamed that I depend on them so much, but I can’t read maps and drive like I use too. Can’t see that small print anymore. They definitely make traveling a lot easier, especially w/ Bluetooth in the helmet. Besides that try and find maps now days.......

That free lifetime maps deal wasnt universal was it?
If so I'll try to get him to update.
TomTom first offered free lifetime maps on several models about 7 or 8 years ago .
Recently they decided that the "lifetime" of those units was over but that you could go ahead and buy a new unit from them with "lifetime free maps" :)

My Mini Countryman cage has built in satnav. One day I asked the service guy if I could get the 2012 map data updated. He basically said I'd need to buy a whole new unit...guess he meant the satnav and not the car!

My Jeep has a built in factory Garmin unit. I can go to the Garmin site and “buy” an upgraded map and load it thru one of the two USB ports. I have to input my Vin. number onto the Garmin web site and it should tell me what map I have and if there is an upgrade. Haven’t try it yet and I am not looking forward to doing so. At least the option is available.

The 660 found a route for the 1399 Mallard address, but it was miles away from the correct location.

Addresses come in a block range in the map data. So, all the map data knows is that on Mallard Rd between Johnstone Rd and the terminus of the road is a range, say 1300-1500. And then it simply averages the distance and spaces the addresses. The shorter the road increments between cross roads or name changes in the road, the higher the fidelity. On a very long sparsely populated road, good luck.
