Hello, I recently picked up a 1970 G15CS rolling frame and gas tank from an estate along with 3 partially rebuilt Commandos and an incredible quantity of parts pieces gearboxes and engines. The frame is stamped 124323. I have the title but MVD is giving me fits because the number is proceeded by G15CS on the title, unfortunately I don't have a matching engine. Its difficult to land a value on this because it is an incomplete bike and seems a little on the rare side. Our dilemma is weather to go through the lengthy process to try and get a title for it prior to selling or just sell it as is. Anyone have any similar experience or value ideas?

Hi Rondo,
I suggest that you post this question in "Other Norton Motorcycles" section above. There is at least one member who can advise you on getting a title in VT by mail, I believe.

I will move the thread to the Other Norton Motorcycles section if you think that will help (as I had already moved it from the Classic Commando section).

My understanding was it was a Norton/Matchless hybrid? The title is named Norton.

I remember hearing that the dealers would put which ever badge on the bike and title that would sell it.
Same as to year of bike being becoming when it was sold.

@grandpaul can you assist?

Ed
Matchless G15CS is not especially rare or collectible unless it's in excellent shape.

N15 is a Norton.

Not sure what prefix was used on the AJS bikes...

I wouldn't worry about the title / model prefix, just sell it as-is.

Would need some pix to even start to give a ballpark value...

Thank you grandpaul. I'll try to figure out how to install a picture. We have wheels, tires, frame, including the back over the fender, fender, gas tank, and I just spotted a primary cover, I think one of the spare gear boxes we have may have come off it but not sure how to identify.

The G15CS and N15CS are hybrids: Norton engine in a Matchless frame. These were nearly identical except for tank badges. This was known as badge engineering. Usually done at the factory but I would believe that they could have been changed at the distributors or dealers. A G15CS should be just as valuable as an N15CS because they are the same bike. Norton might have more prestige to some people. Others here like RonL are very familiar with the hybrids - a lot more than me. I had a '66 G80CS and still have my '61 G3, both singles, but never got into the twins as much. Good luck with it.

It was my understanding, both Matchless and Norton badges were included in the crate, and the dealer put on whichever the customer wanted. The AJS badge may also have been in the crate, but I am not positive about that.

Good observation!
I found a really good article in the Norton Owners Club archives called The Atlas Hybrids-Part 1, it claims "by mid 1967 production of the G.15 came to an end but unsold bikes were registered in Britain as late as 1970" which must be what I have. I'm in NM.

Grandpaul,
Could he get a title from Vt by mail? Aren't you familiar with doing business with Vt. DMV or am I thinking of someone else?
I'm especially interested since I have a 1967 G15CS frame (no title) into which I will be installing a non-matching engine and will probably run into title problems.

I have a '66 N15CS, no title, but mostly complete. I'd love to have another to make one good one but my budget's low. Mine was really cheap and can't be used as a price gauge, it was beer money basically.
