Has anyone else suffered with a persistent leak past the o-ring here? I've replaced the damn thing 3 times, even tried a slightly thicker metric o-ring, but I still get a weep after a highway run. It's just the quadrant o-ring, for now anyway, the cam bolt seems fine. Gearbox is not overfilled, so it's perplexing as you'd think the quadrant shaft being higher up would see less oil than at the cam. Tranny is freshly rebuilt, so the bushes are new.

Has anyone come up with an alternative to the o-ring itself? Or is this just something to suffer with?

I sent my outer case to Matt at Colorado Norton Works and had the O-rings replaced with actual seals. I also had him do a show polish at the same time . I just got tired of trying all of the different suggested solutions with varying degrees of success. The new x-ring worked the best but still leaked a bit. It's been over 3,500 miles and still no leaks including an over 600 mile sprint home from Ashland, OR in 85-90 degree heat.

Casting, bushing, shaft, washer condition?
Filling the internal space is an o-ring
is the cases aluminum bore smooth enough for the o-ring to seal?
Is the bushing in the case not worn and allowing the quadrant shaft to slop around?
Is the quadrant shaft smooth enough and held in position rigid enough to allow a seal to happen?
is the extra thick washer on the end of the quadrant shaft polish/ smooth enough t hold a seal?
are all these bore diameters and depth of pockets small enough to actually be worthy of a seal?
Some of the junk I look at is very bad and you might as well not bother with the oring or quad-X
The flow is small and gear oi is cheap.

Is it worth a hundred dollars of labor to fix it or is it just the pride of knowing how to do a good job?

Check you position of the bush, recessed a little to seat the o seal, bit not so far as to allow it not to be pressed by the washer.

Bushes are new, no slop between them and the case, and they are seated just slightly depressed from the edge of the case boss. Going to try one of these x-ring doodads, but Dave's right, at the end of the day it's just a tiny dribble that I can live with

Ok, does anyone have a part # for the x-ring quadrant and cam bushe seals? I can't seem to find it anywhere??? All I seem able to find is the x-ring version of the kicker shaft seal...

I had the same problem after my recent rebuild. Turns out there was just a wee bit of end play in the shaft preventing the O-ring seal to seal properly. It has to seal between the bushing and the washer and around the shaft. It drove me to the point of distraction, leaking worse then before the rebuild.

During the rebuild I found that the bushing was loose in the case so a new bushing and Loctite was used.

My final solution after trying every known trick; I removed the snap ring, washer and O-ringl(no easy feat in a MKIII) then I made a shim/washer that would fit over the shaft and inside the hole. Then I installed a new O-ring the washer and a new snap ring. This assembly process was a little tricky because some compression was necessary to get the snap ring to seat because of the added shim.

The final result was the transmission has not leaked a drop of oil in the last two-thousand miles. Now 'Pa', my trusty Norton, is leak free!
Ride On

acadian,
I use Seals Unlimited, 1177 King Road,. Burlington, Ontario
Canada. Toll Free: 800-268-5228
The dimensions in the gear box shell is 0.682” to 0.685” and 0.102” depth to where the bushing goes and the bush should be flush when pushed in properly on installation. The shaft diameter on the quadrant is 0.500”. The dimensions on the O-ring are the same.
Give them these numbers and they will come up with a size. The “Q-“ in front of the number will designate a Quad ring type. Ask for Buna or Viton material, as these are oil tolerant.
For the gearbox kick-start shaft it is Q-4213. Edit to the post to show correct Kickstart shaft size which should be Q-4214. Apologies for the wrong size.
The gearbox shifter shaft its Q-4114
If you want the swing arm quad ring number these are Q-4223 and Q 4212
Cheers,
Thomas
