Fuel tap alignment on Roadster tank

I also run the reserve on the right. I've found that I can reach over the tank with my left hand and flip the lever while holding the throttle with my right. Experience tells me that gives me about 20 miles before I hit 'Redneck reserve', which will give me another 2-3 miles. If I know I'm running low and am in traffic, I'll just flip the reserve on and start looking for a gas station.

To each his own, I guess, but I like the reserve in the right for two reasons - you can see how much gas in in reserve by looking through the filler neck, and the main tap is next to the ignition switch.

I also turn the taps off EVERY time I stop the bike. I saw, firsthand, the damage caused to a Commando where the owner forgot to turn the fuel off. His carb inlet valves did not seal tightly, and over the course of the two weeks or so the bike sat in his garage, about half his fuel tank emptied into his crank case and primary - probably 3/4 gallon in his crankcase and a quart in the primary. He then ran the bike until it stopped.

Gas is not nearly as good a lubricant as oil.
