G’day all,

Have any of you fine 961 owners had problems with an intermittent fuel pump.

As I turn on my ignition key the fuel pump is not initialising on an intermittent basis. When this occurs, the bike struggles to start although I can eventually start it, despite the fuel pump not initialising. Several attempts later I here the fuel pump initialise and the bike starts.

Anybody experienced this or have any sage advice.

Thanks.

Steve

Hello Steve - Make sure your battery is maintaining a constant voltage, and not dropping below the required voltage to initialize the fuel pump relay. Another item to check is the the clutch switch, which may have an intermittent fault. - Regards, Willie H

Yea. Check your relays in the light grey box under the hump. Mine backed out a little and got me stranded. All four together. I shimmed it with another this sheet of neoprene. Don't think they'll be backing out again.

I had that last fall after not riding for a while. I think the battery was low. The problem went away after a brisk, but short ride!

Hi all,

Bike made the short trip (50 Km) to the dealer today. Long and short of it is that the Fuel Pump Relay had failed. It was replaced and she is whirring and purring like a kitten. Swift 200 Km roundabout route home and all is good in my garage tonight!

Worth noting that this component is a potential failure point for future reference. Strangely the bike still ran ok although was difficult to start.

Regards.

Good day all,

my 2015 Norton 961 is giving a lot of problems. Problems : 1 ) Difficult to start - solenoid contact damaged and changed . 2 ) Ignition coil changed with a new Bosch - engine started but only for few seconds , cannot keep on running and stops again and again . 3 ) At the turn of the key the Fuel Injection Pump runs but not regularly - we suspect that New Fuel Pump need to be installed . Question : Position very fare from Norton dealer , we know how to do maintenance but we need spare parts . Does any body know how to order the Fuel Injection pump for the Norton 961 ? I believe that this is the same pump used by Moto Guzzi v7 / Moto Guzzi V11 and probably by other bikes , but we want to be sure about the characteristic of the Norton Fuel Injection Pump.

Thanks for your help Antonio

@antonio, it is not clear what the problem is, but if it is the relay I would go to a dealer with the sample and I am sure you find it without contacting the factory.
If it's the whole pump, but I don't think so, try hearing a Moto Guzzi mechanic.
The components of the 961 are quite commercial and often you can find them easily.
In Italy we are few owners of 961, where are you from?

Hi Claudio, I will check the relay and contacts where the relays plug in first and eventually I will go on the fuel pump from Guzzi Griso then. I am in Sicily and my 961 ( according to local...experts ) is the only one in the island . It is really a beautiful bike , I also have the Norton 850 MK3 ( she looks better however ).
Ciao ciao Antonio and thank you for your advice.

I thought I'd revive this one, rather than start another thread.

My bike has been a bit moody to start a few times in the last week and a bit. Not all the time though, somewhat intermittent. Cranks strongly, but wasn't firing. Once it does fire, runs without issue.

After some simple testing today I noticed that I don't always hear the fuel pump start. If I turn the key a few times, once it does, it fires straight up.

I'm assuming the same fault as @Stephen_Spencer and going to replace the relay.

Out of interest - can the brains trust identify which of the branded relays this is? it seems unmarked:
