So let’s say you measure the distance between the PTFE ? Washer and the shims and you come up with around 0.253...Either I am doing it wrong or it is WAY out. If it is way out what would be the benefit or rather the problem with the way it is. I think better handling with it tight but would there be a benefit to loose?

Thanks,
Dave

I don't have the adjustable type.

May be that too loose will result in too much banging around and getting even looser faster? Don't know. I too am using the old style shims and no adjustable vernier, but will most likely be upgrading soon to Micks one.

I don't know if it would loosen faster maybe. Last year I saw the gator turning around so i figured I should have a look at it. Mine used to be the adjustable one's but was traded to the old style for the PO for another bike. I ordered some shims up 8 x .030 so I will have to see what happens come summer.

I've tested on purpose my buddy Wesly's '71 a few years ago when we found his front worn to give over 1/4" gap and not mush less on the rear. Pushing at front or levering by rear tire gave very easy to see gap slop. Following him educated me on how the Commando chassis works, rear patch pivots on rear iso to slap the front till it wiggle the forks. Its was very pleasant to ride, went silent smooth in low 2000's and stayed that way. I tested it by sharp zig zags in lane and crossing lanes, powering into 35 mph hi way turns up to 70. I really could not upset it while riding with spirit enough to get ticketed but not pressing to win a race. Only thing I could feel which a 1/4 sec twitch as the slack taken up then fine. I was really surprised and also understood why Wes who's a great rider and does even more miles on more miserable dangerous roads than me had not bothered about it.

BUT, I know/detest Commando behavior limits, so I did not - would not take his into long held sweepers on increasing power into the 80's, NO WAY JOSE!, But fine to lay into a sweeper rather long and low at a good clip *** just not on much acceleration. With that much slack the hinge onset would fast escalate beyond human speed and strength to recover. A tight ship Cdo in same hinge onset can be held in that wobblely state and not escalate, as long as not increasing loads by turning sharper to more power at same lean.

Wes sorta solved his gap by putting in very thick steel washers the size of the factory friction washers. It actually made his other faults show up worse to vibe up to mid 50's mph, so much so I do want to ride it till gone through, as vibes pretty bad every time much slow up for turns or traffic. Its still a smoothie above 55 mph and pulled like a train till at least to 90.

If not racing around - in freeway scale clover leafs, then likely you'll like loose as a goose and put off correction till in the mood. shhh don't tell anyone, just let em ride and comment how nice it is and admire your fettering/maintenance.

OH yeah, one way loose as a goose can be a nucance, is the tug of triplex chain flop, it not spot on tension hot, and drive chain flap, Especially if the sleeve bushes worn, can tug in reasonace into the isolastics and onset a wobble/weave any time and place, any load or wind conditon, then go dead smooth in exact same conditions, and not show up trying stuff, then relax in puzzlement to have it show up again for 1/2 mile. Ahhhhggg. Only found that one by accident messing with chains to notice same rhythm as on road.
