The bike: 1971 750 Commando Roadster. I intended on converting the isolastic mounts over to the vernier style. I purchased a Front isolastic vernier conversion kit from my favorite supplier. Basically....it didn't fit. It is advertised as being a bolt on/drop in part p/n 06-7337). I have included some pictures to illustrate.
The first photo shows the new part, 06-7337 juxtaposed against the front mount (p/n 06-1410) and frame tabs. As you can see, the total stack stands proud by about 9-10mm on the right.
This next photo shows the STOCK arrangement with the outer collars fitting well within the mounting tabs on the frame. I should add that the frame mounting tabs are well within factory specs at about 155mm apart.
This photo shows the part I purchased, 06-7337 with the inner spindle but without it in the front engine mounting (p/n 06-1410). The inner stack is correct and fits perfectly! Apparently the front mount (p/n 06-1410) will not accommodate the stack.
These next two photos illustrate another potential problem insofar as the difference between the left hand collars; the 1st is the one I purchased, the 2nd in stock. There is about a 4mm difference, meaning that even if I were to install it, the engine would sit canted in the frame therefore causing perhaps significant alignment issues with the engine/transmission/frame.
Finally, this is the front engine mount with scribe marks on both sides. I put these scribe marks in order to illustrate the amount of metal that I assume would need to be removed in order for the measurements to be the same as stock and for the new part to fit. The reason I mention this is because I have read in some of the forums and blogs that the older style isolastic front vernier conversion required that the metal be removed.
My customer service guy (who is top-notch) said that the kit I bought was a Wassel as opposed to an Andover.
Someone please explain this to me. Thanks in advance.
