Front Fork Assembly

So I got a package from Horton. (Thanks, Horton!). And I start putting the pieces together.

I have never seen a good picture of the front fork assembly. The one in the manual and parts book is horrid. I should dive into a Haynes and see if it's any better.

Do I have it right? The only thing I know I'm missing is the pin.

Is this just the thick washer and a nut? How thick is the nut, can you use any 3/8"?

I was wondering about the valve when I popped it on there.

So, aside from that just the pin is missing?

Does the top nut need to be thinner?

What pin are you talking about? Can you go on to Old Britts and give us the part number you are looking for?

0.07874" X .55118" or 1.554667 farnicals (fingernail thickness) by 3.64556 smanitorshes (toenail thickness) Of George Washington

I doubt it makes any real difference.

The standard nuts are .215" thick. A slightly thicker nut would allow a spanner to fit without having to push back the spacer.

What do the o-rings up by the headlight ears actually do? Just buffer the ears from the fork tubes or triple clamps?

Yes.

The o-rings act as shock reducers too the headlight filiment as I have been lead to believe.
Less bulb replacement than earlier machines I guess.

Dave. thanks for the pictures, I had all most forgot what the stock item looked like. Have you considered fitting a early " tapered bolt"Far less trouble...and same result!

Which tapered bolt?

The tapered bolt that fitted pre 1953 forks.....it was a rod with a taper each end, no tube or piston rod, Rebound was zero mid range.compression again all most zero...simple and nothing tricky to assemble. Quite a few TT race's where won using this arrangment......But they where brave !

Ok.

So tried to assemble the forks last nite. Ended up dropping the lower retaining bolt and washer on the floor. Assumed they would only bounce a foot or two. Found bolt, never found the waher. :( Cleared a 10ft radius around the workbench... nothing. Worse than socks in the dryer.

The used damper tube from Old Britts looked new. Really nice.

Pin is under there. Everything looks good. More or less.

It's there, you know it's there. I have got the droppsies to no end. I discovered ways to help like 2 foot magnet or darkening the room and silhouetting every miniscule partical with my cheek smooshed into the cold oily concrete and an led flashlight. then after I giving up to time and cold, I must make my own, order new, sleep at the door step of the hardware waiting for them to open like a squeeling school girl wait for Jonus Brothers tickets only to find that when all is said and done, the part s come in or the store open up or you set down the file and turn off the lathe ......and then the light hits it just right and it sits there...... in the middle of the floor saying........ "Gotcha:"
