I have searched the forum here and a couple of others about the Harley Sportster Prestolite four brush starter conversion for the MK3 850 Commando. I have completed the conversion but since my original starter didn't work I couldn't check direction of rotation before I disassembled it and did the mod. I have found conflicting information on the direction the starter should turn (looking at the gear end). Can anyone tell me for certain which direction it should turn. I understand what is required to change direction, just don't know which way it should go. Thanks in advance!

Thanks L.A.B. for replying to both the posts I placed. I see you name frequently on the various Norton and Brit bike forums. You appear to be one of the Grand Daddys of the Norton owners. I wish there were a lot more out there like you. Thanks again for your help. :D

For the record, the additional field coils, the change to 6 ga. wire and the new Odessey battery have made my starter really spring to life. A very worth while effort which didn't require and extreme amount of work. I purchased a new Harley Sportster starter on Ebay from EMS global direct for $86.90 including shipping. It was mainly used for parts. I think buying the field coils, the brush plate and the brushes would have cost more than that if you could buy them individually.

Thanks to everyone on the forum for the information on this mod. that has been posted over the years. :p
