When refitting the fork top nut to the threaded rod is there a measurement for how far down on the threads it should be? Like, an inch? Or two?

Twice the diameter of the rod sounds like a plan, don't think the hole is much deeper.

If the thin locknut is screwed onto the damper rod as far as possible it should only leave about 1/2" of thread for the cap bolt so screw the nut on as far as possible then run the cap bolt down to the nut and lock them together.

when I serviced my front fork assembly, the top fork nuts were completely disconnected from the damper rods (again, thank you previous owner). seems to me I screwed the damper rod in pretty much as far as it would go and secured the rod nut. I screwed the top fork nuts down and torqued to spec. can't remember the details, so i'm assuming it goes together without much thought process.

Yeah, there's only 1/2" of thread when the top nut is off. Overthinking again.
