Hi, all, just got some 10/30 engine oil and was going to put this in the mark 3 forks, the book says to use 10/30 but have i done right buying engine oil , some help from those in the know would be helpfull Regards Brian

Hello Brian.

You could use 10w/30 or 10w/40 engine oil, or ATF (Filtrate Fluid F) as recommended in the MkIII owner's handbook (the factory workshop manual actually says "SAE 20" oil)? Or you can use ordinary fork oil?

I doubt you will get the same answer from everyone about which one is best, as some riders prefer ATF, personally I prefer SAE20 fork oil, as I find ATF is a bit too thin.

You may have to experiment to see which one suits your riding style and conditions the best? If you experience any topping out of the forks under hard accelleration then the fluid you are using is probably too thin?

I agree. I always use fork oil made for that purpose, either 15W or 20W depending on the ride quality I want. Fork oils have anti-foaming agents and are better suited for the application than standard motor oils.

I use 20W fork oil and Progressive Suspension springs in my Commando and have been very pleased with the combination.

What would be the best brand of ATF fluid to use if I decided to go down that route?

I don't know which brands are available where you live, but ATF type "F" is the one to use.

I use Castrol TQ-F in both of my Triumph's forks.
