", but I worry about the oil picking up dirt when I do this."

I thought I was being meticulous but still had this happen some years ago.
A tiny pebble lodged itself in the rocker feed banjo, partially occluding the flow.
If I do re use oil drained from the sump now, it always gets put through a cheesecloth strainer first

I was looking at the price posted for the 15w50 Mobil 1 car oil. I paid 18 dollars and change for the quart I tested.
After further research I found what I tested is the new "Advanced Formula Supersyn" oil that is replacing the older Mobil 1 15W50.
It was the only 15W50 available at the local auto parts store.

So unless I can find a quart of the normal cheap 15w50 car oil to test, I can not say it is any better than what I tested 20 years ago, and it was no good in a Norton....

Interesting that the Mobil 1 with zinc and phosphorus at those levels had much higher film strength than Redline which carries nearly twice as much zddp as I recall. (2200?)
It has been stated that there is an optimum level for ZDDP and it is around that 1200 ppm mark.
Not sure of the science behind that.

The Mobil 1 15-50 at $20 a gallon gives a low cost option for people who change oil frequently and put on a lot of miles.

Surprised something if enough to partially block rocker flow would be small enough to fit the strainer in the oil tank.

Go to Mobile 1 website, check the "Product Guide". It lists all their oils with properties quantified. 15w50 is 3rd one down on the 3rd page.
It specifically recommends this oil for flat tappets, even tho it is rated SN. I get mine at Walmart for around $9/qt. I'm glad to hear that it has Jim's stamp of approval.

I started using the 15W50 from Walmart in my Guzzi, based on an oil thread I started in a forum. Air cooled, flat tappets... sound familiar? Oil ratings are purposefully obscure, but what I took out of it was that the more modern the specs the better the oil because they are suppose to be backward compatible. Only if you are running something like a Model A should you be worried about the oil not being compatible, while some people thought you could only use the oil specs when the engine was built. And those tend to be more expensive.

Hi Jim,
I recently used a 20/50 oil from a company called "Motor Factory" it's specifically manufactured in the U.S. for air cooled Harley's, and is available in Europe from many places including Amazon and is reasonably priced. Any chance you could give that a spin please?

Donation on it's way.

Cheers,

cliffa.

This is making my head hurt. If you go to the Mobil website and look at "products", "Oil" and "view by viscosity grade" you will see that according to them they only make one 15w-50 synthetic oil. So either some of this stuff sells for twice the price because it has a shinier label or their website isn't up to date.

I think we are still trying to determine whether this oil does have a stamp of approval.

Maybe we need to buy a cheap quart at Walmart and send it along to see if it gets the same results.

$4.59 per quart at the 5 quart price, so it would be a bargain if it tests well.
