I am changing my engine, primary, and gear oil.
I used Redline 20w50 for my engine oil. I also bought redline ATF type F, and Shockproof Heavy gear oil.
I thought I read the Shockproof Heavy gear oil was good for the primary, and the ATF for the gear oil.
I did that today, and now wonder if it should be the other way around. Shockproof Heavy for the gear oil, and ATF F
for the primary.
Any clarification out there. Did I do this wrong?
Thanks,
John

Type F is primary. Unless you have a MK 111 like me and others . The primary hydraulic tensioners don't like it. Shockproof heavy is gearbox. That's what I run. Red. Others will disagree.

Don't run the bike with ATF in the gearbox

I do not believe shockproof oil should go in the primary. It sticks like shit to a blanket, can’t see that giving a nice clutch.

If you’re interested in engine oil you should read this myth busting thread: https://www.accessnorton.com/Oil-Tests/NortonOil.php

Shame you‘re not in the U.K. I have a stock of Redline 20/50 and shockproof gear oil I ain’t using any more...

ATF has always been recommended for the primary. That’s all I recall using since the 70’s. I’ve never had problems using it. I understand my 3’s need a thicker oil because of the tensioner. Don’t know how that effects the clutch although I do recall a friend with a mk3 always having a slipping clutch back in the 70’s. Don’t know the cause, but..

Yes Torontonian no ATF type F for primary 850MK3

Hi, Get an RGM hi-torque bronze clutch set and you will not have a slipping clutch again.

There are other causes than oïl,my 850 MK3 never slipping clutch with original clutch (65000 miles).

Yeah, I guess shockproof in the primary would make my clutch as tight as a frog's ass.

You got it right, John. Except the heavy shockproof does not drain completely even if warm. It sticks like crazy and lots of it will remain in the primary case. You might consider removing the cover and cleaning everything up.
