Just awaiting to get my Commando, as per normal i am allways thinking about little mods.
Goe's without saying the Lansdonwe full monty is going in the forks...Sleeves/ oilon bush's, Composite springs and the adjustable dampers...thats the plug done with.
But my question is ."as anyone used the floating ball tappet adjusters"? i fitted some to my trident years ago...great untill i over reved it...chasing some flash git in a sports car...anyway the old girl suddenly went onto two pots.
The valves had bounced and the ball in the tappet had turned off its flat..Keeping the valve open. :!:

reading about Mushroom tappets made me wonder if anyone was using the old"Floating ball type" i think they where a great idea as the entire valve tip was covered by the FLAT on the ball.
Very little wear was the result...untill the sports car passed me...RED MIST days...well i was 20!...and nobody in a bleedin car passed old JB without a race  I would recommend these BALLs to anyone who treats the old girls with a bit of TLC. Racers ..... Forget it!!

i've seen pointers to try the Porsche type like this, but extra mass and trouble to fit, I've not heard of anyone doing it so far. For below redline use sounds like a life extender.

Here's article/photo's on one version you may be first to show off with.

Hob, Yes the problem with socket wear is going to kick this one out, pity... it's basicly a good idea,
thanks for the pictures and double quick responce!

I ran a Trident for many years. Stock they had the ball ends. I too remember
having a hangup and finding a beer can pop top along side the road to
roll the flat of the ball back!
Later I went to the socket head with caps on the valve stem. My main
desire was to protect the head of the valve from indentation, you could
simply toss the caps when worn. Perhaps they came from Norman Hyde,
cannot remember now. They went in through the top so easy to fit but
didnt offer the wider contact patch as those for Commando have.

Small world ! We must be the LAST breed to do road side fix's...break down now...where's my mobile.....hello AA? Biggest road side was a clutch off,
I worked with a old school chap who striped a 250 NSU down in europe and used a bit off his leather belt to make a big end shell! It got him home in blighty:!:

RGM used to sell them a long time ago. I have used a set with good results. He says they are too difficult to manufacture so he doesn't offer them any more.

Hello Bert, sorry John Tickle,
Yes the ball seat would be tricky to machine, i assume its ground?

have you got the bike on the road yet? its been years

Jonh Tickle are you a past Norton parts designer?

VW and Porsche use a variety of ball-swivel-elephant foot ajusters, but often need the bottom of rocker are milled away for extra clearance, threads redone and must be screwed in from below the rocker end.

On my special I'm using hard lash caps and Old Brits narrow mushrooms.

They do still slide across the stem and I've always thought they might put more side loading on guides and stems due to the greater friction caused the large footprint. I replaced the set fitted to my old gal as soon as I could and fitted lash caps and mushrooms.

No to sure about extra valve/guide thrust. some of the dents seen in old valves suggests PLENTY of fore-aft shoving what ever is used :?: But i will go with you and old Hobit....lash caps and mushrooms

Yes, got a set of RGM ones fitted to my Commando, they've been in there quite a long time.
The only problem fitting them is the extra length under the rocker and similar fitting problems to the mushroom type.
To make room and keep the rocker angles right I fitted shorter atlas valves.
Side loadings on the valve stem should be less than any other type.

Not had any problems with them and the valve stems are like new.
