I am having some transmission work done on my MK III. I think that I will change the final drive sprocket and chain if the primary cover has to come off. I would like to drop the freeway RPM a bit. As near as I can tell, the stock final drive sprocket on at 75 MK III is a 20 tooth. Should I change to a 21 tooth or a 22 tooth sprocket. I don't want to loose all my zip off the line, but I would like to lower the RPM at freeway speeds. Any thoughts?

I replaced the 19 tooth with a 21 tooth and am happy with it.
Depends on what you are after. Racing from one stop light to the next light 19 best but a 21 tooth gives me 3,000 rpm at 50mph and happy with pickup off the line.

21T is a good choice for unfaired motorcycle. My JPN had a 23T, but was wind resistance comfortable for the rider at over 90mph.

I just went from 21 to 22 on the Combat with 4s cam. Fantastic.
Great at 110 klm (68 mph) and still gets off the lights really well.
No probs passing other vehicles in top gear at 70/80 klm or down one and whaooo.
Third gear in traffic, 60 klm no worries.
Edit... I think if I was more of a boy racer, 21 and a half would be perfect.
That is 22 on the front and up 2 teeth on the back.

MK 111s should have had a 22 tooth ex factory but lots could have changed in the meantime. 22 tooth front is a good thing.
