few (small) electrical problems

Hi everybody!

Not posting a lot lately. Actually, not driving a lot lately. The wife thinks the second kiddo likes it better to be taken to kindergarten by car.

Anyway, in short, my bike was not the most dependable of the 916's but i did not have major issues for the last 2 years. It is 5 years old now and i stopped insurance from the end of 2016. Not going to sell it, but it is going into hibernation mode for a few years. I have a few old Nortons to enjoy and there will be a time i will get this one out again.

Now, to be able to store it without problems, i went for a trip today and had 2 small issues:
• After filling up, i reset the trip computer and drove away. The first time i looked at my speedo again, it wat totally dead. No needle movement, no display, no backlight. Only 2 things i noticed working were neutral and oil warning light, BUT, instead of a continuous light, they were blinking. Only when they were supposed to be lit. After a few hours of driving, and switching ignition on and off, it suddenly went back to normal after a long press on the program button (not the first time, just a random press).

• The second problem was not the first time: After lunch, we went back on our bikes but mine did not start. As if the killswitch was turned off. Checked everything (5 times) but no luck. I did notice a voltage drop when pressing the start button, but no starter or even a solenoid/relay click. So a coil must be getting power, but is not engaging the contacts. The first time the problem occurred, it started perfectly the next morning. This time we push-started the bike (not easy), and from the next stop on, it started perfectly. Might be a relay suffering from heat or something. As soon as i find the time to dig into it, i'll post it here.

Hi I am not sure about the first issue but I had a cam sensor jam on my bike which result in the starter turning the engine over but it would not start. I know its different from your problem but maybe worth checking. The relay is situated at the front of the engine low down and directly in line with the front wheel and all the crap it throws up. The sensor is a cheap part but it won't run without it.

If you can hear the starter solenoid engage but not turn the bike over. Could be the contacts. If you visit the CNW website. There is a one07 starter solenoid rebuild kit available to replace and set the contacts. I also have a manual on replacing the contacts. Take The soenoid cover off and if they are toast then buy the kit and you'll be good to go. Don't forget to disconnect battery before removing cover.

As far as no gauges. Probaly a loose or bad connection. Pull the headlight bucket off and pull apart and reconnect all plugs.

Good luck!

HI did you sort the problem no power to starter motor , Mine had the problem after a push start got home and now stars on the button now !

Have you tried putting a piece of high density foam inside the fuse box to hold the fuses in place ? There should already be a foam piece holding the relays in , now add another piece just over the fuses area . The foam must be thick enough to keep the fuses pressed in when the cover is snapped in place. Also , use zip ties to hold the plugs in from the back along with securing the gray plastic cover in place. I believe the factory was injecting silicone grease into the backs of those plugs for waterproofing.
