Does anyone have an aerosol color match to the dull silver/gray color for fender stays? Everything I look at just doesn't look right. It is either too bright or too dark or too glossy. I am going to try as a suggestion from TimS color matching from an auto body paint supplier as a last resort, but thought I'd throw it out here to see if someone has found a close match.
 
It is the same silver as British cars used in the 60-70's on the steel stamped wheels that came on MG's, Triumphs, and the like. I found some silver wheel paint that worked for me but I have noticed a total take over of the spray paint market in the auto part stores and Plastic Cote is terminated with vigor by the competitor even taking all the old cans and shelves away this was some rough play and I even asked if I could get some old cans and was told no.
 
norbsa48503, thanks knowing British car wheel paint is a match is a tremendous help. I am sure I can come up with a match or cross reference based on that. TimS and I were looking at Eastwood's site and the detail silver looks about right, but it's hard to tell from a picture and it's 13 bucks a can.
 
I don't know if it's any help, but I had some "chrome" paint from duplicolor I think and it was real shiny as long as the item was polished. Then I put some clear on it to protect it, and it turned a totally different colour. All the shine went out of it and it looked like mat silver. You might try that as an inexpensive alternative.

I was trying to paint a fender to look like chrome and the "chrome" paint had no durability to it, that's why the clear coat.

VHT makes a metallic paint too, but I haven't tried the clear over it. I may do that tomorrow, since it is supposed to get to 45 degrees.

Eastwood Company - Argent/Silver Rally Wheel Paint Aerosol 12oz.

Bought it for this purpose but have not used it yet.

Also the right stuff for early 50s "argenized" rims on Matchless.

The Triumph vintage car guys use Eastwood Argent rattle cans on our wheels for the closest match to original color.

I had mine powder coated with some alloy wheels so they are the same colour eg slivery grey.
 
I went to the local auto paint supplier and had a couple cans of Ford argent silver mixed up. Hope it is good because the price was eye popping. Man paint has gone up in the last few years and I learned to ask price before committing today.:shock: Thanks for all the suggestions.
 
I stopped doing my own spraying a few years ago because of the prices. I don't use enough of it and it goes bad too fast. But still use some rattle cans. I think the spray can technology is improved. The PJ1 Fast Black is excellent and good for all the little brackets and fabricated things. Not as nice as a basecoat/clearcoat finish but decent.
 
I used the brand "VHT" high heat enamel. Primed it with high heat primer, put on a few coats of the "flat aluminium" color and baked it in the oven for 45 minutes at a temperature i can remember... between 300 and 400 F i think. It came out looking just like the original color, Id post pics but the painted stuff is not near me right now - I might get a chance this weekend.

I've owned two 850's, both 1974's, with what looked like original paint on the front fender stays. They were NOT silver or metalllic. They were a very light gray (non-metallic). I know this runs contrary to all the other responses. They didn't look very good in gray so I repainted them silver.

I used the Duplicolor 500 degree cast aluminum. Great finish.
Kinda like original only much better.

I agree with the above post. My 74 Commando stays are a dull gray, almost with a greenish tint. I would also like to repaint mine, but want to stick with original color.
