If it was a car, you could turn the radio up louder. That even fixes worn big end bearings.

I knew for sure he was going to get to the bottom of things in finding out what was going on.
I get the handle bar skitter at about 40-45 when the blacktop is uneven myself & also when gorilla griping the bars too. It almost makes one inclined to direct it towards the bike until you take note of when it occurs.

AHA!!!!!!!!!!!!! just went to garage and assumed the position and watched chain as I turned rear wheel.......observed links as they went behind inner primary...heard the scratching....observed master link emerge...it has shiny place and faint aluminum coloring on it....the culprit found is found out!!

now you mention that !!! think maybe 15 or 16 years ago I found same thing happening ..... sorry Alan, never occurred to me that was your issue as I only ever noticed that rub while pushing bike or spinning wheel on stand ....jeshhhh
Craig

For two days I was believing we were in the primary case with this...Glad you pinpointed the issue....Reminds me My spare connector link is not in my kit. ? Must remedy this soon.

lawd! I thought it was $omething going to be co$tly……….I just got back in house after reversing master link and carefully lining up and adjusting chain...noise gone...PS a few of the reg'lar links next to the master one had a small amount of fine alum. powder on them too...sometimes it's the simple things.....

I'd have to do some research of old material, but I seem to remember advice of having the master link installed with the clip inside away from the inner primary case.

Split link should clear the primary case. I’d check your centre mount for the primary case is not pulling the case inwards slightly.

Unless you’ve got a wide chain or weird big split link, the split link is not your root cause I think.

Maybe another shim behind the inner case next time you pull it apart will fix that and give a bit more room for the chain, its very close so getting the shims right is very important, some Nortons will only need one shim others needs 2 or more, but it be the shims not right to cause the chain to rub and the joining link is slightly wider than the other links.

will check other possibilities but for now no sound is ok with me..chain is diamond brand if that makes any diff...

While others may dispute your findings on the drive chain rubbing, I suggested that you check there in an earlier post because I had the same issue. Not all chains of the same "size" measure out the same. My English made previous chains and master links fit well but when I installed a DID chain there was a bit of rubbing until the aluminum on the case was scraped away. The chain and master didn't take off much material at least not enough that I was worried. I did replace the master once the rubbing stopped.

I believe I'll have to back you on this because what you're doing is matching chain pitch. Plate thickness and overall width could have some deviation between manufacturers, especially if they convert from English to metric or visa versa. #50 pitch is lighter service with split seams in the rollers while # 520 is heavier service with solid rollers, and I have seen it with thicker plates where I've mistaken it for #60 at a quick glance. So it would pay to look up the info and compare the OEM to what you currently have prior to opening things up .. Easier to look than turn wrenches anyway.

I am satisfied it was the chain just touching the inner primary...light dusting of alum. evidence on links and witness marks on chain pins...turning master link around carefully tightening primary and rear chains noise gone

Tried a Diamond 530 heavy duty chain once years ago. It rubbed. Much fatter than stock Renold. I use RK now.

I’ve just removed my primary and noticed evidence of chain rubbing on the raised lip. And I’m only using the very narrow IWIS supplied by Andy the chain man.

I’ll pay more attention to the shimming of the centre mount on re-assembly. I’ll also grind away some of the raised lip.

There ain’t a lot of spare clearance there !
