I had a previous helicoil sparkplug insert repair fail, backed out with the plug. I replaced it with a time sert big sert which is designed to repair failed helicoil inserts. I did it with the head on the bike and then got concerned about how close it was to the valve so ended up pulling the head. Here's what it looks like.
Failed Helicoil plug fix

It cut threads right up to the back of the valve seat but the seat itself appears undamaged. In a few days, I will get the valve and spring back in and check for sealing.
This is from another angle. As can be seen the insert does not reach all the way to combustion chamber face but is recessed a few mm.

Here's the other side for comparison

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

It will probably be OK. Worst case is the valve seat will get loose and or fall out. I have seen several run like this for a long time.

Be aware that a steel insert will raise the heat range of the spark plug by 1 to 2 points so you will need a cooler plug in that hole.

At this point the head is beyond a good repair such as a tapered bronze insert that will keep away from the seat and conduct the heat away from the plug.. Jim

Thanks Comnoz. With the other bikes I have on the road, none of them get more than a couple of thousand miles a year so hopefully it will hold together as long as I have it. I generally run NGK BPR 7es plugs, and they look pretty clean. Couple of turns of carbon on the threads. I'll try 8's. Should I leave a 7 in the other side?

Yes, I would stay with a 7 on the unmodified side and use an 8 on the side with an insert. They should come out about the same. Jim

How does one inform future owners or repairmen of the one side cooler heat range? What would happen if a standard heat plug was run a while? Seems to take over 2 decades to cover most the scope of Commando features.

Well if the plug ran too hot it would glow and ignite the mixture before the spark happened. A few seconds later you would either hole a cast piston or seize a forged piston. Jim

So you put heat range 8 in each side and it will be fine, that is if you really need to sell a Commando!...
