They look lovely but how do you, or even can you, stop them going a straw colour?

As Baz says, you cannot stop them going a straw colour.
However, you can clean off the straw colour quickly using Stellar stainless steel cleaner: https://www.barnitts.co.uk/products/details/7322.html.
You can also use this product to remove bluing from chromium plated pipes, and without scratching - it's effective and gentle.

Regarding broken down pipes, esp stainless: in the past hobot suggested "waisting" the rubber spool mounts to give more "give". Ive gone
that route and believe it helps. However, the mounts will break eventually. Id rather replace mounts than down pipes.
Be as careful as possible when setting up the pipes and silencers. Try to lay it all out with neutral load. Hard to do because the headers
never seem to be correctly aligned. But you have to try, it matters.

Not much you can do about the straw colour
You can run a TIG brush over them every now and then to make them as good as chrome

Sorry to bump an old thread.

Does the whole lot go yellow or just up near the head?

A bit late to the party, but I really like the mirror polished stainless steel silencers and exhaust pipes from Armour's in Bournemouth.
Unlike many silencers, these are seamless where the rear cone attaches, which I like.
Also, you don't need ugly clips to secure the silencers to the exhaust pipes.

Currently deciding the silencer & down pipe route, so can i ask what the fit is like with Armour product??

The fit is not the problem with Armours, just if there is any issue they refuse to help or refund. They do not do anything in house other than stocking the pipes so no longer control the bending, they swear blind my BSA B44 is an inch longer than all other B44's and that's the reason their pipe does not fit my bike not that the pipe is short. Stick with AN or RGM.

That's really disappointing to read... especially when the web site reads "These exhaust pipes are made by Armours in the UK"

I've got an Armours stainless exhaust system on my Matchless single. It will ALL turn yellow but it is a lighter shade as you get closer to the end of the muffler.

I have a pair of Andover Norton front pipes in chrome and they do fit the MK 3 very well. Just enough clearance for the primary drain plug and would certainly buy the same again when they need replacing.

On the MK 111 the primary drain plug is the issue. So as it sticks out and rubs against the stock LH pipe I simply pulled the primary outer cover and fitted it reversed , from the inside not the outside. I don't know that thread size but have been thinking a hex screw would be better that would not protrude so much to hit the LH header pipe. Ideas ?

Pete,
I've used Commando Specialties down pipes for a mk 3 in the past (although I've now gone back to original)
they have the correct flange to mate up with the mk3 collets etc.
OK, they have to be imported from USA but they fit and work properly.
Pea shooters I've had from a few places, but on ebay BSA 111 has decent British made ones.
cheers
sam

The ones you are referring to were made by Cycle Shack, who ceased several years back. They are no longer available. L F Harris make an equivalent set.

Like Martin, I have the Commando specialties down pipes fitted. Expensive as they are from the states, but they fit well and come overlength so you can cut them down to suit the silencers you want to fit. If you have access to turning facility's, try and get some thinner conical seatings and collets turned up. This will allow the exhaust rings to screw further into the head. The MK3 is the worst in this aspect as the standard arrangement only provides three or four threads engagement.

They are not actually "over length", but rather made as a conversion pipe designed to fit with peashooters on black cap brackets. Fitting them to peashooter brackets makes them "too long".

I bought a set of Commando Specialties seamless exhausts, along with the Les Harris headers for my MK2 s few years ago.

I thought the quality of the LH pipes were good, although they were a bit far out on the timing side when all lined up with the exhausts.

I was not at all impressed with the exhausts (I think these are Emgo?). The neck of the pipe broke just before the weld after about 1000 miles.

Half tempted to get my current pipes & silencers rechromed for £420.

I know they fit & I know they sound incredible.

Pipes are stamped N63 which I'm led to believe were produced by Armour for Norvil in the 90s(?)

I don't know who manufactured the silencers, I don't think they are original as they're seamless? Looking inside the silencer I can see 3 rows of what I can poorly describe as little raised hills.

I saw that Andover have replicated the original silencers but at £360 inc. VAT they aren't cheap!

I had a pair of OEM 750 head pipes rechromed here for $400 US (ouch). The right side pipe sits much closer to the frame rail than any aftermarket set I've used. No interference with the stock 850 kicker. I have Wassel seamless silencers and I love them. Bought from Old Britts maybe 10 years ago, but apparently no longer available.

I can recommend Keihan exhausts. I have had a set of conti replicas on my 900SS since the 80's.
