Think I'm getting my new headers from epco this week. As they are unbalanced type and not the 850 balanced type should I use the 750 type crush washers or the 850 collet type washers?

The extra three threads of engagement will help to keep your head safer from the harm they encounter. Use the bronze ones for a stay tight fit. But if you have the repair carried out by someone using bronze inserts you need the cast steel ones or an old set of powdered S.S. ones done by Schultz(RIP).

There are a few different designs of crush washers, some are thicker than others. Thin ones don't work with the short 850 style threadded collars, there's not enough threads. Thick ones like the Suzuki steel crush washers work fine on my 850 with 850 collars.

I did that change this spring, I just put the 850 collet washers back in, I use full length bronze collars.

What are these collet washers, I have never heard of them.
I know there is the flanged pipes & the belled out type without the welded on flange.

They are a washer flat on one side and domed on the other, the dome fits into the belled end and allows the exhaust to be at a slight angle when tightened up, good for getting extra kickstart clearance.

Oh I see. Mine were the belled ended pipes, until they split, then I welded flanges on them & they have been alright since.
A friend put them on his & they split through vibration. Mind you, I used to regularly split the flanged type as well.

Pelican,

If you are going to use the 850 exhaust lock rings (nuts) then you must use the collets. They take up the extra depth. In both cases you will need the corrugated crush washers (063995) between the pipe flange and the head. (Unless the bike is a Mk3 or has been converted to the "belled end" pipes. These have a bevelled exhaust seat placed in the head, a bevelled seating flange on the pipe, and the collets are also bevelled. You cannot use these with flat flanged pipes.)

If you are using 750 lock rings, you simply need the corrugated crush washers.

Thanks, got them today. Now I just have to wait for the mufflers. The headers do have a bevel on the inside, but I guess I'm going to try the crush washers first as I'm fitting the cnw stainless exhaust nuts- getting a couple extra threads in can't hurt...

What are the heat properties of stainless vs. the aluminum head? Anyone else fit these cnw nuts? Do they loosen up?
