Horses for courses! I use 750 pipes and nuts on my 850 and much prefer them. I do use the same tightening technique, though, and agree it works just fine.
I like the 850 nuts because they are heavier. I've put the thinner 750 nuts out of round trying to remove them. After you've had them off and are re-installing them just snug them up and after you've run the engine a bit snug them some more and keep an eye on them for the next week or so. Eventually they will stay put without going too crazy on the torque. I used to use a pipe wrench on them because I had one (and didn't have the special tool) Works fine.
