Looking to shorten/open up my 961 exhausts but having negative responses, Canyon, Cone, Motad etc. I'm considering having them chopped, partially gutted and the cone rewelded on. Any heads-up to what I might find inside?
 
Ok, I gotta ask, why not just wait a bit and buy from the factory? Or, if you want an even better sound, look and build quality, why not buy from Thiel Motorsports?
No probs. I want to keep the look, rev. cone, but not keen on the length. Thiel I've looked at but being from Yorkshire the price put me off and, as there good stainless, remodelling shouldn't be a problem.
 
Hmmm, whilst taking a hacksaw to the pipes may seem cheap, what about the rest of the job...

If you get ‘bespoke‘ silencers designed, what will you do about mapping? Power Commander? Buy a new programmable ECU? etc... they’re all expensive options.

My bike had the factory de cat link pipe and shortie silencers, and the relevant factory map for this set up.

Later on I fitted Thiel silencers, and the map was perfect.

Thiel pipes have a lagged straight through perforated pipe inside (I can’t recall the ID though, maybe 2”).

So... if you get your pipes modified with a straight through perforated tube, and if you run the de cat link pipe, at least I can tell you that the factory map for de cat and shorties will work well.

Anything else and you could be into the realms of trial and error... which can be a fantastically interesting exercise, or a huge pain in the arse, depending on your point of view !

I have gutted my standard long pipes ,( haven't put them back together yet ).
It is a PITA , I could post pictures but can't quite work that out..... I was amazed of the amount of baffling in there.
My intention was to rebuild with larger diameter perferated pipe than my factory louds for a little more volume and experiment with packing for tone.

Thanks, good info! As I'm not quite run in yet I'm just kicking things about. Wanted to stick with the cat for starters, reverse cones, std. mapping. Those Thiel shorties seem the way to go to look right though, cheer's.
 
My factory modded design of open longs has absorption in the long section and a straight through pipe in the next forward section instead of the normal perforated pipe with absorption. Perfect balance of sound quality and volume. A few people have ordered this mod. Running it with factory open map and no cat.

That sounds almost perfect, take a couple of inches off the long section and job done.

That‘s a good idea. Then you probably wouldn’t need the outrigger wheels and warning triangle on the end of ‘em like Clive has...

HA! Flat Eddie I've just had a couple of compartments fitted into them and now I can carry a full set of camping gear and luggage for the weekend and the left one opens up into a barbecue so put that in your stumpies and smoke it!!!!

Now now guys, it's not the length but what it's packing ☺️.
 
Just back from taking the 961 out, run-in now so stretched it's legs a bit. Fast open roads for 30 or so miles then back via some twisties. Getting to like the subtle sounds now, nice at cruising speeds but still rorty through the gears. Think I'll leave it as is for now.
 
Well, bullit bit! Last run out a few weeks ago and a flying pebble hit my left silencer 2/3 along, topside. Sat looking at it today and thought, fate and in the right place for shortening. Took some mulling over but, wtf, new blade in my hacksaw, some marking out and .......... now shorter by 180mm. Couldn't believe the no of baffles and restrictive 15mm pipe between compartments, no packing and the end cone cosmetic. Now to remove the end cone, rework and have fabd up. Incidentally, been sat for a few weeks, battery at 11.9 and started up fine. Sounding better as well, once rev cone fitted she'll be reet, hopefully.

The 3/4 inch holes that took the exhaust from section to section are now gone and the route is via 8 new 1/4 holes in the front plate then out via a central 3/4 hole and 4 X 1/4 holes in the rear plate into the rev cone. Running well in the shed, here's to better testing and maybe more holes in the spring.

Back from the welders today and back on the bike. Sounding and looking good, not the best of welding but should clean up and polish ok. Warmed up nicely after the 3rd try, runs smooth and crisp to 4K+ so looking forward to the summer for some further testing. Brucie bonus, the transmission is not as noisy.
