Well Jseng1 that's a pretty bold statement because as far as I know ALL Commando's (for a decade) left the factory with Hepolite pistons and aren't really known for your stated accident to happen. Although I agree the JE type piston clip is better.

You, the anti Taiwanese advocate used Emgo pistons? What would make you do something like that? Quality for price maybe. You should have known better.

"JCC/Hepolite" and original "Hepolite" pistons as fitted by the factory are not the same thing.
JCC/Hepolite pistons are Hepolites in name only.

Original Hepolite pistons had Seeger circlips

Go back and look at oOnortonOo photo of Emgo (?) wire clips on the previous page. You can see that the top clip is worn flat on one side from rubbing against the pin.

I don't know what to say about that picture, because the clip doesn't appear to be in a groove.

Like others, I didn't use the clips with the straight bit and the enormous tang.

Well, my point was that jseng1 said "the tangs on the JCC/Hepolite clips are an accident waiting to happen." he didn't mention original factory Hepolites.
 
LAB my point is that the JCC/Hepolite clips are the same as the original factory Hepolite clips so it doesn't make any difference whether Jseng1 mentioned the old or new Hepolite clips!

How can you be sure they were both manufactured to exactly the same specifications and quality?

Note that jseng1 referred to "the tangs on the JCC/Hepolite clips" so could not have meant Seeger clips.
 
IF Jseng1 didn't mean Seeger clips he shouldn't have mentioned Hepolite because Hepolite only use(d) Seeger clips as far as I know. I have used original Hepolite pistons and use new (JCC) Hepolite pistons (since 2011) and have no complains what so ever. For road use the Hepolite piston sure is good value for your money. Of course for track use I also recommend forged pistons (at least twice the price of the cast Hepolite pistons).

What he said was "....JCC/Hepolite clips.....".

It would seem not all JCC/Hepolite pistons have Seeger circlips. Maybe all JCC Commando pistons should have Seeger clips, I don't know.

I'm not sure why. I raced for years with Hepolite cast pistons. Never had a failure. And if you reed JS's manual -so did he. Jim

Sure I also raced with Hepolite and GPM cast pistons because then (eighties) there wasn't much choise unless you spent a fortune on custom made forged pistons like Mahle. I wonder what type of pistons (cast or forged) are used nowadays in GP or Superbike?

Talking to the guys in the MRA I get the idea most are running stock pistons -at least at the local level.
If they do use forged it's because it's the only way to get more compression. [sv650s] Jim

No, they were recommended to me by Bob Raber of Raber’s Parts Mart in 1999. That was then, this is now.

If you had actually read my post, rather than react, you would see I am against buying foreign when there is an alternative made in the USA. This being for American consumers. I’m not anti-Taiwan, I’m pro-American.

I’m no longer in the market for pistons, but if I were I wouldn’t use Emgo.
 
How many sources are there for pistons to fit my Commando?

So far I’ve learned to be afraid of circlips, be on guard for left vs. right, and to not ask advice on parts unless I can verify the origin of manufacture.

There is very little information here to help me make an educated decision about choosing pistons, rings or finding a source.

There's ample response to that inquiry and there's an abundance of good information here.

If you are in the market for new pistons, what are your specific needs?

As for "how many sources are there for pistons" to fit your Commando, the answer is, nearly as many as there are manufacturers of pistons. What are your needs and what are you willing to pay?

With normal bore sizes I would use JCC, with good circlips. Jim
