Hey, I need some help today. finishing up getting my commando 750 up and running after a motor overhaul. I know very little about the electrics but I smashed a black plastic piece on the primary side that has wires going to it. I'm at work today and placing a final parts order, chain, filters, etc....I need this part but don't have time at work to look it up. can you help me identify, primary side attached to the aluminum gusset at the foot pegs. sorry for being an idiot, thanks if you can help me out.

The only black plastic item with wires I can think in that area would be the rear brake light switch (99-1028), however that bolts to a plate on the brake pedal? [Edit: From a previous photo I can see you bike has rearsets so it probably is the brake light switch.

The rear brake switch is the cheapest switch I have ever seen. You can replace with a micro-switch that will last a lifetime.
I can give you ordering info if you are interested.

I would be interested in an alternate switch. I actually had a NOS switch in the box of stuff that came with the bike and did put it on. Never felt good about that switch.

Mike,
It just needs to be adjusted correctly. The blades have a tendency of shifting up and then it doesn't work, as it should. Pop the rubber top off and push the blades back into its home position with the wire connectors on. Then put the rubber back on and check for proper brake light operation.

the cheap brake light switch is a well known pile of garbage. the top rubber cap (if you can call it rubber) is just one of the issues with this junk.

Its beauty is in its simplicity. Wouldn't you agree, bill?

simplicity yes, longevity not hardly  i would rather spend my money on something that has a lot longer shelf life than an open bottle of beer.

Yes it is a piece of junk but if it is set up properly it will function, as it should. It takes a beating down there where it lives on a stock commando. :? I think the Prod racer has a better location for the switch up at the brake drum. At least the one that I saw.

Try allied electronics part # bz-2rw825-a2. roller lever type micro switch.
You will have to drill a small hole for the mount plate but still an easy install.
Very reliable unit.
