Hi , new to the Norton , can someone tell me what the electrical thing is on the right hand rear of the Z plate , also the plug type thing by the air filter right side, what was its original purpose "battery charger plug input " cheers . Vaughn.

The Bob socket was for a razor I believe.
A member (Bob oddly enough) on FB posted being at some form of Norton meeting prior to 1971 and they were asked what could be added to the bikes, he said some form of power socket which was introduced for the 1971 year. (That's enough coincidence for me)
It was a quality 'metal version for that one year before the rubberised version 1972 onward.

The 1971 air filter plate is a one off also as far as the two holes for the screws that mount it, moved to the battery tray and rubber 1972 onward.

I was told by a older British gentleman it was used to plug in heated long johns for them cold nights in England, but its a power outlet anyway.

I use it as a temporary socket for my cheap Chinese volt meter I’ve stuck on my top yoke so I can watch the volts when I’m riding.

I had one of those cheap Chinese voltmeters on my commando for a while
The one I had was not particularly accurate but gave a good indication of the charging system
It lasted just over a year then died
I then permanently fitted a BMW boxer voltmeter
This is 40 years old but works fine and is accurate

I don't leave the house without my 12v electric razor
Having that socket has been a godsend to me
HAHAHA i use mine for the 12 volt fridge, need to keep the beer cold on those hot balmy days here in AUS

You should get yourself a Lucas fridge
They are very cheap on electric!!!

I have the female portion mounted just above the "Z" plate on the right side but do not have the male plug. How does one prevent inserting the plug reverse polarity even if only part way?

The pins and sockets are slightly different diameters, however, it is still possible for the pins to touch the sockets so one way to avoid a wrong connection would be to swing one pin away from the socket and test the other pin. If loose or doesn't fit then it has to be the wrong pin for that particular socket.
