I recently purchased an early Fastback tail section from AN. I haven't received it yet but I have a couple of questions regarding fixing the badges to both the petrol tank and the tail section.
Regarding both, I have a non-painted Fastback tank from RGM in a white color similar to the AN tail section.
I am concerned regarding what I should tell the painter to do regarding the badge depressions. Paint or no paint. Prime or no prime.
Also. what adhesive should be used to secure the badges?
I contacted AN and received an email telling me that they couldn't advise me.

Has anyone here dealt with this issue?

Thanks,
Ed

The original badges had a square (about 1” x 1”) flexible adhesive pad. I don’t know what adhesive it was but, on my tail fairing, it is still holding on very well after all these years. I guess that a brittle adhesive would not have lasted as well but then you don’t need it to last 50+ years so an epoxy adhesive should do. The original petrol tank was destroyed in a fire and replaced with a big yellow Norvil thing but the badges on the original were the same as on the tail one.

Thank you Hybridracer,
Out of curiosity, how do you know about the adhesive pads? Were/are you able to remove the badge(s) to see the pads? Also, do you know whether the pads were applied to the finished gel coat paint?

Thanks,
Ed

Tell your painter to paint the whole tank, it will be fine. The badges on my '68 Commando are stuck on with engine grade RTV, & have remained stuck for years. You could also use 3M VHB tape.

I also had a scrap tank (accident damaged) with one badge still on it which I prized off complete with the pad. I can’t be sure about the tank surface finish under the adhesive after 52years but I think it was the same paint as the finished tank.

I am just in the process of sourcing some replacements as I am aware the replacements from AN are not 100% correct. The company I have spoken to can replicate the shiny/ metallic backing.

However, I am of the opinion that the badges did not have a break in the 'N'? On the early posters I cannot see a break.

Glad someone is investigating this. I don't know the answer but am interested in your progress as I need to do the same thing.

Once I work out how to upload pictures I will send the proof.

Once I have sorted mine out and I am happy I am happy let you know where to source them from.

My commando has an indian tank which has smaller recesses that the orginal tank (I believe).

Supplier has confirmed he can do the shiney backing and modify the diameter to suit.

Can anyone confirm the diameter of the tail badge? Not 100% its the same diameter as the tank badge.

Some of the automotive adhesives used these days are ridiculously strong. A bit expensive, but worth it for something like this. You don't want them falling off.

And if one examines the tank badge in the closeup photo of the rh side of the '68 commando in the Sept 1968 'Cycle World' Norton Commando Road Test the break is visible.

I went through my junk today and found three badges I am confident are original, and all have the break in the N. These badges were on a tank and tailpiece (red) that I bought 20 years ago, mostly to get the tailpiece since my 20m3 had a later tailpiece without the badge landing. They were affixed to the tank with an approximately 1in square piece of what looks like black double sided foam tape. Very difficult to remove. Tank also had unfaded red paint (gelcoat?) under the tank which gets my vote for the original color.

Hi likevelos.
Can you measure the diameter of the three? Are they the same?

Thanks,
Ed
