Early clutch query

Hi. Glen from Oz. My bike has from what the evils of google has provided it seems, an earlier type clutch. Pictures thus far of 16H's and the like are showing similarity to my components and i'm wondering what i can use with it and where to get the bits from. Theres some sort of brass wire in what i think are asbestos corks in the friction plates, one of which is bent. A source for a replacement of these plates in australia would be welcomed. The pressure plate lift rod that looks like an exhaust valve from a stationary motor has also copped it with the ball that pushes it out having burned a hemispherical divot in so i'm wondering if they exist too please. Were any of these clutches equipped with more than 4 friction discs by any chance?

I also note that the next model (58-9 and onwards) of clutch reverses the layout of the plates with the friction items having the internal spline and the steels in the basket. Can these be swapped late to early, IE, are the splines and tang slots the same please?

Last thing concerns the spring buckets and studs. Are the early ones for the pressed steel flat three spring pressure plate the same as later gear or specific? Anyone with a link to a parts diagram of the early clutch that could point me in that direction would be thankfully appreciated.

My apologies as i know the bike is not norton but as the clutch appears to be i thought i'd have a run at it in this section of the forum.

Ta muchly for your time, glen.

Welcome here.
Modaks in Melbourne are possible source of parts.
The friction inserts in Norton's have been some sort of friction material with the brass like you say since the 1930s, cork could be a replacement.
Don't know about WD stuff (military) though.

The later AMC clutch is interchangeable as a whole unit, not sure about the individual parts - not near the parts books to check.
Modaks would know.

I use one of those = you can buy replacement plates which are full circle friction material and also those with friction material bonded to steel. Modak has carried a lot of Norton bits in the past and would be the first place I'd look. If you have that early clutch fitted to the commando mainshaft, it can be out of alignment with the engine sprocket by about 6mm unless you find an engine sprocket with the correct offset. (There are many different depths of taper and number of teeth) I get around the situation by using floating JAWA Speedway engine sprockets on a specially made carrier.

Thankyou for the replies. Rang Modak this arve and plates are available but the actuation mushroom isn't. Still quite keen to know what swaps and what won't though and an exploded diagram of early and the AMC style would be a godsend. Thanks.

Hi possm. Not a chance in hell. No offence to you, but never gonna happen.

Thankyou nonetheless. Any other suggestions welcomed.

Why i'm after a parts diagram?

Don't think you really need an answer if thats not your question, but feel free to read into whats not written.

Back to having access to both clutches.
The outer splines are the same, but the hub in the centre of the AMC clutch is larger, thus the inner splines are different.

So the plates are not interchangeable as sets.
And the switcheroo in driven and driver plates means there is no source of spares for earlier clutches...
