Does anyone know the difference in all the different mudguard numbers on the early bikes, the 68 Commando (original Fastback) lists 06.0583 (export), the 'R' lists 06.0619A (chrome or dull), the 'S' lists 25542A, the 69 Fastback lists 06.0619A (same as R), and the 70 Roadster lists 25542.

Reason I'm asking is because I am trying to find a replacement for the S type front fender for a friend and I've had Nelson tell me that if you fit a 71 front fender on it, the thing gets locked in the S type exhaust with hard braking. I'm looking for a replacement for the S front fender that will not do that.

The stays are another issue.

I do know that my original S bridge and stays are shorter than the 71 parts by about 1" and I doubt if you can fit much more than a 3.00-19 under it. Mine has less than 1" clearance from rubber to fender.

I can't help with the numbers, but from my experience, the 68-70 mudguard blades are the same. And as you found, will not take a tire much larger than a 3.00-19. In '71-'72 the guard is chrome, but wider so they could fit a 4.10-19 tire. In '73 (some late '72's) the guards are stainless.

I think the different numbers come from the slightly different central bridge mounts.

Hi Dave, i have been buying guard stays and bridges mainly off ebay for my bikes which has led me to beleive that the early pre 71 S and roadster had a bridge and stays shorter than the fastback and R type, i beleive the shorter stay /bridge combo was to clear the S type exhaust, the fast back/R stay and bridge is longer like the 71 guard has a simular width with a silightly different radyis but the stays and bridge are wider and also as you say 1" longer and with a squigle/S bend to clear the wider tyre.

Aye ; 3.00 - 19 ribbed speedmaster .

Later 3.50 Avon G.P. or Dunlop 3.25 K81 low profiles would foul that guard ? !
Incedently the P.R. rear Guard was the Original Fastback chromed steel one .

I wonder what the difference is between the 25542A for the S and the 25542 for the Roadster? We may have to try the 06.0583 as that may be the closest we can come to getting the correct one. I know people have used the 71 and up guards with the earlier bikes, but new stays have to be used and mainly with the Roadster pipes where it won't foul.

just for information, the early rear guard had 2 types. See mine in blue on the left and the later 69/70 one on the right. Mine mounts on a bracket between the shock tops and the other (later number) one mounts off a plate from the frame although they both have a C section as opposed to the 71 and later D section. Look at the oil tank too, mine has the breather going into the top hat and this one (later) it goes into the top of the main tank.

Does the A denote chrome?, Re the bridge as they came part of the guard there appears to be no p/n for them though i have 2 different lengths. On My recent visit to the U.S. I called at Rabers in SanJose and they had N.O.S. Eary stays in stock though i did not note the p/n as i have enough for mine.

As far as I know, the 69/70 S and Roadster both had chrome guards, at least that shows in the brochures, they look exactly the same, but slight differences may not be detectable. I think maybe some of the Home fastback (first Commando) models may have had painted front guards. I'm almost certain that the S front guard was specific for that model because of the exhaust, but I just don't have any proof of that.

I'll give Raber's a call and pick their brain or see if they have the S type guard.

I may send Frank Damp an email and see if he remembers anything.
