Hi
Has any one used duplicolor scratch fix?
I have a 75 with a candy apple red tank with a couple chips about 1/16 of an inch
I was wondering if someone has figured out which, if any, color in the scratch fix range is close
The have lots of different reds, they are cross referenced to some car models

Candy colors are notoriously difficult to even match for the same color - the silver basecoat and the quantity of transparent red applied over the top both greatly influence the final color.

Do any cars even have paint like this to find a match - offhand I can only think of bikes, bicycles, hotrods, and custom paint cars with candy apple reds ?

BMW and probably Harleys and Honsukiyamakwacks all had candy red bikes, and some at least can supply paintsticks for minor repairs - probably get a fair match there, with some study... ?

Hi
Thanks
The paint on the bike is original so if I can help it I don't ever want to repaint it
I have just a few small chips that I want to touch up, mostly to keep them from spreading
I am looking for the best match, I realize it will show, won't be a perfect match

Duplicolor makes touch up pens and they come in many, many reds
If you buy them at the store you can go by the color name 'poppy red' etc.
If you order them online you go by the car you are trying to match

So I was looking for someone that might have done or considered this, what car red looks most like the 75 Norton red?

Thanks Again

Theres a dedicated auto paint place in my town that only deals with vehicle paint products. I noticed they have a color matching computer or machine or something there. I think you can take a sample in and have them match it with a color code. Maybe you have a auto paint place around you that you can talk to about that?

If the chips and scratches are small I would consider looking at nail polish. The selection is huge and the stuff is pretty tough. In fact, take in a side cover to one of the big places where they have women attend to the customers with samples and they will probably get a big kick out of helping you. If not, find another.

I tried matching my Duplicolor MetalSpecks blue with a new can and it's different. You may just have to go for the closest you can find and don't fill anything more than the hole you need to fix.

Yes I realise you are only filling in a few scratches - my point was that Norton candy apple red uses an extremely bright and extremely strong red (transparent) lacquer to get the effect over a silver basecoat - no cars I can think of have used such a bright red lacquer. And without the silver basecoat underneath, just a red lacquer in a scratch looks rather odd by itself, may really stand out. And even duplicolors own version of candy red is not nearly as red. So finding a match in their car range of paints may be somewhat impossible. ?

That suggestion about getting a match with nail polish may be a good one - lacquers up until not so long ago were nitro-cellulose based, as are nail polishes. And if you don't like the result, a wipe over with nail polish remover (acetone) will remove it - and shouldn't interfere with your original Norton paint.

P.S. Anyone know what brand or type of paint Norton used to paint their candy apple red - or who did their painting, the Norton factory didn't have their own paint shop ?? At least, you never see mention of it (?).

P.S. i tried covering over a few scratches on a candy red bicycle frame, a long time back.
(bicycles use a lot of candy colors = transparent coloured lacquer over a silver base).
Used what seemed a fairly strong red shade paint stick - it shows up only too clearly as a totally different red. The silver basecoat was still intact too.

Hmmm, wonder if bicycle shops do paintsticks ??
