Works fine until you have a minor problem like a chipped valve adjuster and the metal from it wipes out the whole motor. Ask me how I know. Jim

I have been going back and forth on the "filter-thing", the filter set-up HAS to look-good and the standard-setup just does not. I am thinking HARD about a Trident-filter (but ideally I want one with a Stainless-Steel case and Aeroquip-fittings), does anybody make a filter-setup that is "pretty" (race-stuff qualifies as long as it looks good).

My pre-Peel '72 had hot and long history as demo bike then 3 owners in regular use then me in '99 w/o a filter and had as much sludge in tank and crank as Trixie '72 did with filter on most its life. Both had mid 30K miles showing on oddometers but I know that just measures time the cable and drive were kept up with. Peel with oil filter and only Mobll One and plenty of changes showed up to 1/2 of 35 yrs sludge layer in new crank after only 7000 miles. Over rev event made me look in crank again for a let down on filter effectiveness and more appreciation of tradition Brit Iron wisdom not to bother with em. I am not saying don't run an oil filter but its way over sold sense of security and protection.

Oil filter will not do a thing to protect oil pump or piston skirts or cam lobes or fiction wear. Anything loose inside crank case is already doing it bad juju. Filters only catch big stuff like RTV and finger nail filling size particles so maybe less sludge collects but the vast majority of sludge size particles which are in the friction damage size, are passed almost freely through standard filters to settle out where ever. If you seek friction and cleaner bottoms look into secondary "bypass" filters. No one trusts or uses those to pass the whole volume of oil pump through though.

Only a sieve over the sump intake can protect oil pump but nothing else. Yet can't be too fine a filter or the stuff missed by filter may pile up where its actually being produced. I know oil pump can digest thrust washer tabs and still pump enough even with scored walls and notches in mating cog teeth. ugh.

If ya want to jump fence away from standard wart hog looking type look into the alloy canister and screen types that offer at or below 40 micron screens. Usually fuel filters big enough to feed a hot V8 and come with 15 micron. Present Peels oil screen cost over $100 not counting another $100 in AN fittings and hose to plumb it.

Hobot stated with knowledgable finality:
Oil filter will not do a thing to protect oil pump or piston skirts or cam lobes or fiction wear.

Thanks!

I, wrongly, thought otherwise.

If you're willing to go with a 7Ah battery, then there's room under the seat for a stock unit. It's easy to get a hold of and it's cleaner up there. I had to remove the the toolkit pocket thing, but the sidecover fits ok.

I was excited to see the Peterson inline filters, with ball valve... and started searching for info with regard to filtration size...

The smallest particle sizes I can find for the mesh inline filters are 45 microns (0.0015"), and after doing some googleing... I found that a standard paper type cartridge filter will filter to 30 microns (0.001").... so even if you filter to 0.001" you are still going to pass these 1 thou particles through your bearings... which have what... 1 thou clearance?

So while the inline filters look nice, I am sceptical....

Mike.

Note: I don't know what I am talking about, just googled and read a bunch of experts comments on internet forums! ;-)

You can't see the stock filter unless you look too hard. I have one of the Ducati chrome ones so it looks pretty.

If you want an easy filter here is one. It has a 1 mic. paper element with more area than the original filter and a bypass valve that works. It is an inline automatic transmission filter part # GF25 from NAPA. Not chrome and it doesn't work with steel braid lines but it is lightweight and easy to use.

That looks like a good idea.... is it fitted to the return line?

Mike

Yes, it goes in the return line just like the factory unit would.

Having trouble finding that part number over here in sweden, or even on ebay.

Are you using teh GF25 filter on your bike??

3/8" fittings?

I did find this though, which sounds similar... if you read the description it sounds too good to be true... which means it might be!

What do you think about this..?

As a mechanic, I think the original Commando oil filter set-up looks BEAUTIFULLY functional. I spent $100 and a couple hours ADDING one to my OIF Trump. Unfiltered oil is fine... for $150 lawn mower engines.
