I was considering switching to the Fram#2839 oil filter for my commando.
Does this screw onto the oil filter mount without using a threaded adapter?
I'm looking to buy screw on stock threaded filters without getting into an adapter.
I'm on my last NOS Domi Racer orange filter so I'm going to need a new supply for next season.
Thanks,
Marshal

Commando Oil Filter Question

Direct screw on I presume?

Yup. I might try to find a non-chrome one next time. It's a little too Harley for me.

.. but you have to lie on the ground to see your reflection - which kind of defeats the purpose. I think the chrome is great, but it the unit is pretty much invisible.

My filter unit is causing me some grief at the moment; I have discovered that both of the bolts that hold it to the frame have come off with vibration, it is being held in position (sort of) only by the hoses. It seems that the threads have sheared. I think that I am going to have to try to rethread it in situ; having just changed the oil I am a bit loathe to do it the proper way and disconnect the hoses and take the unit off to rethread it with an oversize thread. It was pretty easy to install without the rear wheel in place; I have a feeling that the repair will not be as simple...

ph2839 screw straight on been using this number cross since the 70's

PH2839 +1, very cheap when you buy them from the local motor factors, just got 6 last week at under £3 each!

Commando Oil Filter Question

Do you not have the locking tab bracket for the filter? I may not use mine, instead I'll drill the sockets and safety wire them. And locktite.

Swooshdave,

thanks for the photo and the logical fix; seems pretty obvious as soon as someone else says it - why didn't I do that? I wonder if that locking washer is in the small group of pieces that I couldn't find a home for in my rebuild...

Isn't it Fram which makes notoriously cheap filters?

I use K&N 153s, cause I have a bunch on hand for my Ducati plus I love the 17mm nut for easy removal.

I wouldn't use Fram under any circumstances.

Best, I've heard, are Purolator, especially their "Pure One" sub-brand, but I can't find a cross-reference. Anybody? Bueller?

From what I saw one of the brands that doesn't use paper elements is Amsoil. Not sure if they make one for the Norton.

You guys know how to scare people! Anyway over 150,000 miles using mainly Fram filters and the engine has only been apart maybe 4 times, still on the original crank on second grind so I must have been lucky! 8)

Actually I don't get too worked up over the filters. As some will tell you many bikes ran forever without a filter. It's not like these bikes are daily drivers anymore.
