First of all, thanks to everyone for helping me figure out the rich fuel condition I was experiencing. I dropped the needle one notch and turned the air screw in until the flat spot went away. It starts and runs better and seems to have a little more pep. Plugs look nice too.
Everything was going great, until....
I jumped on to ride to work, everything was normal starting and warming up, get on the road and immediately notice that the drive chain is rubbing the inner primary cover, LOUDLY. So I turned it around and took the truck.
I looked around with a mirror, but you can't really see anything in there, no matter which way you hold your tongue. Only thing I can figure is that the gearbox torqued in the cradle. The day before this new issue, I had taken my wife for a ride. Must be the additional load was enough to pull the gearbox (and NO, I'm not saying my wife is fat...).
So, I hope to pull the primary off this weekend and see what the damage is. Clutch plates needed a cleaning anyway. I've already ordered a 20 tooth sprocket to try out. I want to put on a dual gearbox adjuster while I'm in there. Is Clubman Racing the only place in the US that has the dual adjuster? I intend to run a belt primary in the future, so I'll put it on now if I can.

Thanks,
Ben

If you have a small camera like a Coolpix or similar, you can put it right on the bottom run of the chain and take a picture. It may take a few tries and then it's really hard to see what is what in there, especially if it's dirty.

You might be able to see it with a small mirror and lots of light.

You can see the clearance from my swing arm to the inner cover on this one.

Hey that's a neat camera trick!
Got my camera all greasy too.
My bike has a 19T CS sprocket.

Is the swing arm/rear wheel still all aligned?

And, for the love of pete, DO NOT mention to your wife about "extra load caused XXXX". Even if she weighs 80 lbs. bad juju

concours - Yes, the swingarm and wheel are aligned. That was the first thing I checked as it's easily viewed. I took a look at the top gearbox mount and adjuster, but I couldn't tell if it had moved.
The chain to primary cover clearance has always been very small. With the bike not running, spinning the wheel would produce a click as the masterlink when around the gearbox sprocket. Something has moved just enough to make the entire length of the chain rub. I could probably fix it by loosening things up and reseting, but I want to see what the inner primary cover looks like, change out the sprocket, clean the clutch plates and add the dual adjuster, so I'll pull it apart.
Dave and Bob - Thanks for the pictures and ideas. I know the chain is rubbing, I just wanted to see if there was something obvious going on in there and couldn't get a good look at it.

Besides Clubman's, where else are dual adjusters available. I'll probably just order one from Clubman's tonight, but I'm curious.

You got proper shim behind the center bolt on the inner primary?

I thought everyone who did the upgrade just made them a second set of OEM parts, drilled the cradle, reversed the direction of adjustment on the primary side, and installed a longer main bolt?

Ordering from Clubmen is easiest on the phone. FYI. Here's a picture of their adjuster installed, as well as a pic of Maneys adjuster. I'm not familiar with the Maney one, but I believe Hobot has or had one at some point, so he might be able to enlighten you as to it's effectiveness. I didn't read thru everything, but it sounds like your inner chain case needs shimmed out to clear final drive chain.

Cheers

hello All

just a thought here.

Is there a difference between ANSI and BS chain, especially regarding overall width.

if there is a noticeable difference, could this be contributing to the scraping.
kind regards to all
Bradley

Yes, I have the #34 spacer.
To be honest, I can't recall getting things shimmed just right when I put the primary on during the rebuild. Maybe I did and something else is going on, but I doubt it. I'm pretty sure I can shim it properly and take care of this problem.
I called Clubman and ordered the dual adjuster tonight. Will be in the mail tomorrow.
Hopefully there's nothing else going on and it will be a simple fix.

Thanks,
Ben

You can gain a bit of clearance from the chain to the inner primary with another small shim under the center mounting stud for the inner cover, but best to make sure you have the right shim and is flat on the crank case to start with and then see where you are. Best done apart.

Is the chain rubbing on the GB or the inner cover? You said inner cover so that shouldn't be too hard. I'm sure you'll figure it. Some put the clip link on the other side too.

#34 is the thick spacer
it is. I forgot mine on reassembly and it was enough of an offset to cause the chain to rub on the primary.

I'm almost positive that the clip for the masterlink is on the gearbox side of the chain, but I'll double check.
Right now, the whole length of the chain is rubbing, not just the masterlink. I can see that the rivet heads on the primary side of the chain are shined up from rubbing the inner primary cover.
Parts are on the way. Going to be a busy weekend with Mother's Day and my wife's birthday. Hoping to pull it apart Sunday morning if everything goes to plan.
